Yeah, the sticky stuff is from the membranes. I find that snuggling with the chicks in a sweatshirt pocket gets them to fluff the rest of the way.

Thanks suechick. So is the humidity low or high? I have two in the brooder snuggling together. I figured they will fluff each other up. I have one that I think is getting shrink wrapped. I may have to help.

Sounds like a lot of chicks! Is that a normal hatch rate? I am just suprised with the 8 out of 20...now....were those all viable just before lockdown? Like I started with 29, but only went into lockdown with 21...then got 19. Were those the original numbers before you culled?

That is pretty normal for shipped eggs, overall, but remember, eggs that never started to develop do not count against your hatch rate, only eggs that started and quit. I can't remember how many just never started in this bunch, not too many, maybe 7-8? I just don't care about the rate for rate's sake, but below is how to calculate hatch rate vs fertility rate.

For example, I started with 86, but 6 were not even fertile from my own hen, so those don't count at all, plus any others that never even got started would count. If out of 86 total eggs, 10 never even started, then my total to start from is 76. To get the hatch rate, divide 44 by 76, which is about a 58% hatch rate.

Fertility rate is different. Then, I do count all the eggs. Divide 44 by 86 and the fertility rate for the incubation is 51%. That means that 58% of the 51% that were fertile actually hatched.

I have a pip in one of the marans eggs. Either bcm or bbs. Not sure. I didn't label n keep track well enough

Ok so my barred rock hatch is over now. I ended up with 9 out of the 11 that went into lockdown. One died at hatch and one was facing the wrong way in the shell and died. I had received 18 eggs with 4 broken upon arrival leaving 14. 1 of those was infertile and 2 died early on (bloodrings) So the 9 out of 13 gives me a 69% hatch rate for my shipped eggs in our homemade styrofoam cooler incubator. I am very pleased with how it turned out. I posted a few pictures of 1 of them in the what gender is this thread if anyone wants to take a guess. Thanks for this thread it was very helpful to me
