GJ_Kate - So what grade is your class? I think it's soo great that you're doing this so the kids can learn and enjoy the process!
How do you see into your maran eggs? You must have the world's best candler...

I teach 1st grade, this is my first full year. (last year started in October in Kindergarten - what fun!) Hopefully I still have a job at the end of the year (I'm low man on the totem pole at this school...)
I bought a Coleman flashlight from Walmart for about $35. I think its 115 lumens. They were still really really hard to see into. I had the lights out in my classroom, but there was still light coming in from the outside door. I had to just hold it really still for a few seconds and then I could just see a shadow of something swimming by, very faintly.
Yesterday and today, we did an "egg-speriment". We put eggs in vinegar and the kids had to write down a hypothesis of what they thought would happen. They other 1st grade teacher just put one white egg in. Well me and my plethora of eggs put one white, one light blue and one brown. The white and light blue looked the same today since their shells completely dissolved, along with any color. But the brown egg, the shell dissolved, but the brown color was left behind but I could scrape it off the membrane. The kids went nuts, they were so excited.

Oh, that is sooo cool, I have 2 kids and we've never done the egg in vinegar trick before. That sounds like a good weekend project!

I would think they'd have to keep you at the school if you do such cool stuff like bring in an incubator and hatch eggs with them! Hey, for LA you could write silly rhymes or stories using chicken idioms like: "Don't count your chickens before they hatch"

Right now my kids are busy watching our broody hen on the new chicken cam channel. My hubby hooked up a nature video camera to the nest box and now we can watch her sit on the eggs. It's a little more action than watching the eggs in the incubator, but not much. It will be more fun at hatching time.

I set 2 silkie eggs and 10 Ameraucana/Barred Rock cross eggs on the 19th if my math is right I should be hatching around the 6th or so.

This is my second set in my homemade bator my first set I had 7 fertile silkie eggs hatched 5 of the seven. I have my hopes high for this go round.

I just candled ( a few days early, I couldn't wait!! ) and I have 12/15 fertile so far!! There's just something about seeing the little "thump thump" of the heartbeats that just melt my heart!! They're mostly EEs, which are my favorite. I use this small flashlight that I got from Target to candle, it was $20 but so worth it! I can see everything inside of my eggs. I used it during my last hatch and could see toes and beaks it was so bright. I thought it was crazy of me to buy a $20 flashlight but it has definitely come in handy and I'm glad I bought it. Its from Inova and about 4'

I'm due on the 7th.

I'm a total candling addict. I'll probably take a peek every day now until lockdown. I put the ones that are easiest to see at one end of the egg turner so I can grab them quick when someone comes over to see.

We have the funniest time look at the leghorn babies move! They are very active and white shells make it so easy. they are going to be big babies though! Of course the eggs are bigger, but the actual baby is bigger then the others, same development, just size!
