Anyone HATCHING?!?!? Newbie's and addicts WELCOME!!!! Hatch Calendar page 1!!!!

Yesterday when I got home, I found my speckled sussex chick dead in the brooder,

She was fine when I left, and I examined her body and couldn't find anything wrong. My silkie chick is doing fine, except now she's all lonely and goes crazy chirping everytime I leave the room. I just wish I knew what happened??

I lost a silkie yesterday that was three weeks old!!! It was perfectly fine the night before and gone the next day! I think with my silkie the others may have caused some type of head trauma but sussex don't have the raised skulls! Can you find someone in your area you can get a chick off of? I am so very sorry

I am picking favorite on your chicks now too, thats too funny!!

I have a question, I candled my eggs I still have in the bator last night, I got rid of some and opened them, one looked almost fully developed, guess he/she was just too weak?? I left a few in, I don't know what an internal pip looks like, but I thought I sa something, or I could just be making it up in my head, I am on day 26 now, so should I toss them??

oh no...I'm sorry guys for losing a chick...that would be very distressing especially not knowing what happened...Silkymom I am also sorry that your poor little baby is all by herself now...

Melissa...my silkie that had neck problems does not put her head between her legs any more and fall over...she is very hard to distinguish from the others. She does have a little bend in her neck but other than that she is fine so i am soooo glad I did not rush and cull her (I even went out and bought a new hand axe the other day for it!

I was reading all the posts on the new cull thread going and I think I might need to get an axe as well. I used the baking soda on my three day old but I think on an older chick the axe might be kinder
love.gif
Did you use the polyvisol on her? I use it on my newly hatched tortoises until they start to eat on their own! With tortoises they can take up to a week or more before they feed

I would put a small whole in the very end - large end - of the egg and see if you can see a beak or any movement before you throw them away! An internal pip looks like a pointy beak shaped shadow in the air sac

Pete55 has some good threads on helping. Sometimes if they have internally piped but can't externally pip they will suffocate so the small whole lets the air in until you can help!
