Awww, Congratulations, Silkiemom!
Great job sitting on those eggs!
It's amazing how "blond" the RIR chicks look until they grow out their feathers. But they are precious. Can't wait to see your silkies.
Regarding the local silkies...the little hen wasn't ugly. As a matter of fact my son (10 y.o.) thought she was cute, but couldn't catch her because she was so skittish. The man did show me that she had the proper five toes. What bothered me was that she was non-bearded. Wouldn't that be a bad trait to add to my flock? I don't know if maybe the offspring take on the genetics of the bearded parent? I honestly couldn't see the rooster that good. It was getting dark and their coop wasn't lighted. He was black and was a good size, but I didn't get a good look at his comb...which I'm adamant about being dark cranberry/black and being pea/almond shaped. He had a descent amount of feathers around his head and I didn't get to inspect him up close. I'm just worried, "what if he has a normal rooster comb?"
Or, are you saying it would just be a good experience to try hatching them because they are local...and then sell all of them as chicks...but not necessarily add them to my future breeding flock? That would be a great experience.
The man sells a dozen eggs for $8 bucks, so that isn't bad. I did pay him $5 for the five blue/greenish EE eggs I got last night, though. And, we know they were fresh, because he collected them from the nest boxes when we were there. His Americaunas were tan/blackish with the cute cheek puffs.
Well, I'm going to go out and open up the coop, give my spoiled chickens their hot breakfast and POSSIBLY slip those fertile eggs onto Buffy's nest.
Wish me luck!
