Here in Austin we have Bat fest once a year. There are thousands and thousands of bats that live under the Congress street bridge and every evening they all fly out for the night. Really beautiful. Never thought of having one as a pet though. The fruit bats look mighty cute.

We used to live in S. Louisiana and I always saw tons of insect eating bats at night. They really can put a dent in the mosquito population. With so many US cities cutting back on on thier mosquito spaying control programs to save money, you'd think they would put up more bat houses to attract them.
Nectar eating bats also pollinate plants especially night bloomers and fruiting trees and cactus flowers/fruit.

This thread reminded me of a story about a bat house that the University of FL had a few years ago that got so heavy the whole thing caved in lol.
