DW used to get concerned with small holes under the edge of the shelters.. My view is if its small enough to get through there, it really doesn't want to.

Totally. When I was free ranging my chickens (stopped because they pooped up the porch and took to raiding the neighbor's bird feeder) I had one rooster that liked going under the house he would come out with newts and swallow them whole. I've also seen my chickens eat mice and voles. They also try to get the barn swallows and finches that come to clean up their feed, but the little birds are too fast for them. However, there is nothing funnier then watching a chicken chase a butterfly.Extra protein! I saw my aussie w/ what I thought was a big worm hanging out of her mouth.. nope, it was a frog. Then my daughter saw someone w a toad a few days later. Viscous carnivorous!
Yes! We had big mosquito looking things a few weeks ago and as the chickens walked through the grass the bugs would fly up and they'd run and more would fly and they'd be going back and forth after them.
