Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I've thought about the fermented feed. But the article/post I read about it made it sound like they only gave the birds a small amount of fermented feed at a time & it sounded like they used mostly scratch grains to make it which I thought wasn't supposed to be that great for them. They did say you can use whatever feed you want, but it seemed like if I mixed crumble or pellets w/ water I'd just end up with mash.
Yes Scratch grains have 8 % protein..which is too low as a all the time diet .
Grains have to be fermented longer too
You can ferment all feed ..pellets , crumbles , fresh ground and it all ends up as a wet mash .Right now I am using 20 % Grower Mash for everyone which I am fermenting .
It is better for them ( less waste ..they absorb more of the nutrients ) and it supposed to strengthen their immune system

Ok... This is one Mom's and grandmom's will appreciate... DS told me our granddaughter had not pooped enough over a period of time and unleashed me to provide all the cherry tomatoes she wanted. Now its important to know that other than fruit snacks, cherry tomatoes are her favorite.

So I went out and picked all the ripe cherry tomatoes and proceeded to give them to her. Wa la... She blew out her diaper and declared her tummy felt better.

She's loving farm life!:yesss:
Sounds like she's almost ready to potty train if she's declaring things! :D

I follow this recipe BASICALLY

Only, I leave out the sugar, rice flour, squid and fish sauce but add in oyster sauce, as I usually have that on hand. I can't remember which pepper flake she uses, but I use gochugaru powder.
I've got oyster and fish sauce in the fridge! I know what I'm doing this week!!!:drool

Here is a little bit of an interesting story that happened today. I went out earlier to gather eggs. I found our New Hampshire pullet, Dottie (for the black dot on the back of her neck, well above her hackle markings), on the nest, trying to lay an egg. I picked her up, gathered the eggs and put her back. When I went out later, I saw her standing outside the nest box singing the egg song. When I looked in the box, I found this egg. I think it is funny that Dottie lays spotty eggs.

Sweet egg! Reminds me of Anne of Green Gables with her freckles

I’m thinkin’ that squirrel is part of this crime family:

And he looks eerily similar to this mugshot:

Damm squirrels can keep the seeds. Just wish they'd stop planting filbert & walnut trees all over my yard:barnie

I don't have a scale.. Yet.
I've had some giant eggs I'd love to know the size of.

I don't eat saurkraut, or food w bones in it. Once my mom made soup from a chicken carcass, I scooped out a bowl and there was a vertebrae in it... I dumped it out. Ribs, wings... I don't think so.
I bake & knit a lot so I have an electronic kitchen scale... to weigh flour and yarn.

Since I got my girls this year, I've stopped eating chicken. Just can't look em in the eye without feeling bad.
But I do love a good hearty oxtail soup in the winter! I grew up with it as a simple bone broth kinda soup, but discovered a version from the Philippines that has peanut butter. Yummers!

I eat sauerkraut polish style with kielbasa sausage, sour cream & apple sauce.

I can't seem to get the link to the kimchi recipe to work. Anyway I follow my grandma's recipe which is super simple. Most important things are lots of garlic & ginger

We had chickens when I was a kid, my parents had some of them processed.. I didn't eat chicken for years.
My SIL is from the Philippines and they eat bones there. They even steam fertilized eggs at 18 days and eat them.. Literally eating a chick. Um, no thanks. I also don't eat steaks, chicken, or pork if there's bones in it. At all. I can pick it off if I have to, but I don't eat the meat off bones. Cartilage, fat, skin, organ.. Gag.

As a red head who loves my hair color and freckles, I always found it hard to understand why Anne hated her's so much. I always wished for straight hair. When I was younger, my hair would often rival Merida's from Brave.

Balut. 18 day incubated duck egg! I've seen people eat these. They stink to high heaven and have their beaks and feet. Their f*ckin beaks and feet! (Someone told me it adds crunch.) :sick

Let's see, about a year ago I grew out and harvested 820+ pounds of chicken for the freezer. We made 90 quarts of stock from the feet and carcass of the cut-ups. A couple weeks ago we made another 50 quarts from left over carcasses.

Good for you! I wish I could do it. I try my best not to waste food but I don't think I could eat what had 'carcass' in it. I can't eat a chicken if it still looks like a chicken. So no rotisserie or wings here. (This started after I started raising chickens)

I also have naturally curly hair with an album tint. When I was young my mom would actually iron it with a clothes iron on an ironing board. No straight irons when I was in school. She would put a pillow case on it and iron it.....crazy. Now I love my curls. But I also love cabbage, tapioca pudding and seafood and I absolutely hated those things when I was young. Go figure
