They do not suffer. They are much better off at your home than any chicken in the grocery case ever had it. Even the crappyist job you do is better! here is someone today who is in your boat: Butchered first chicken- did I do it right? No vet around has anything to do with chickens. I luckily have a friend who has come to my rescue to end suffering a few times. If there was a way I was comfortable with, knowing I can't screw it up, I would do it.
Sheesh.....I was out putting down sod all day and missed so much fun! Took me half an hour to catch up.
Given that people use on average 10% of their brains, who's really dumb?
I know someone who swears his hens lay more eggs because he plays them classical music. Mine are so noisy I don't think they'd even hear it.
Im right there with ya on the teenager.Don't get me wrong I know my birds live in the lap of luxury. They have a better life then any commercially raised bird. It's me who can't get past it. I can't bring myself to cull. If I did I'm not sure I'd be able to eat it.
People tell me I'll get there one day. I have moments with a troublesome teenage boy that make me think I might.
But if I'm honest with myself it will never happen.
So sorry.Im right there with ya on the teenager.
I have 1 ( of 4) left at home and sometimes she's the dearest buddy you could ever want, other times shes shockingly mean and says such hateful things... it just knocks the wind out of me.
Honestly I'm not as strong a person as I used to be. We lost our oldest son to suicide 6 years ago. It left me with a huge hole in my heart.
That's a good one!Chick peas! They practically plant themselves!!
Seriously! I won't have ANY dirt left in my raised boxes!

Was named at only a few weeks old because I thought he was a boy then. LOL No problems other then the sexual frustration he seems to have.
