Good morning, Squatchers! I take a day off, read a couple books, come back, and there are 13 pages to catch up on!! Jeez Louise!! schvetty crap balls!

My chickens water froze for the first time. It's getting COLD here in the dirty Jersey. First hard frost, and all 14 are still alive and pecking.

Got some catching up to do!

n the video games, Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike, the phrase “ollie, ollie, oxen free” is used a number of times to pass along information to other members of the team. In Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, if a player shoots an enemy and then hides, the player is hunted down with the phrase “Ollie, ollie, oxen free! Come out, come out wherever you are!”

Aside from that, it’s hard to find published references to the phrase “ollie, ollie, oxen free.”

Children’s sayings were hardly recorded until the 1950s, and even then, the sayings are very variable. That’s because they’ve been passed down orally from one generation to the next, with no adult intervention or correction. And so, errors in passing the sayings down from generation to generation is not unlike the misheard lyrics of popular songs over the decades.

The most likely explanation for the phrase is that it is a corruption of the German “Alle, alle auch sind frei” which, when translated, means “Everyone, everyone also is free.”

When “alle, alle auch sind frei” is said in a normal speaking voice, phonetically it sounds somewhat like this: aw-luh aw-luh owhk zint fry. Imagine how it sounds when excited children are running about, shouting this at the top of their lungs and it’s easy to see how it becomes this: aw-luh aw-luh owxin fry. With minimal effort, it easily becomes: ollie, ollie, oxen free.

It may also be a corruption of “allez, allez” which is a Norman addition to the English language from French and is pronounced “all-ay, all-ay.” The word “allez” in French, of course, means “go.” The ensuing “in kommen frei” was a phrase popular in Dutch/German New York and Pennsylvania and meant “come in free.” In this case, “Allez, allez, in kommon frie” may have morphed into a French-English hybrid: “Allez, allez, come in free!”

Used to be, I'd never get in bed before midnight.... now, from pain, I'm getting UP at midnight..... don't you hate those *up in the middle of the night* things, where you KNOW you are wide the frik awake.... and you aren't going back to sleep until 4?!?!? Can't do anything for fear of waking up everyone in the house... or at least waking up the dogs... and then THEY'LL wanna go out... and middle of the night cold outside is just... man it SUCKS!!

I'm so old... ugh. When did this happen?!?!?

Decided to put turkey enchiladas on the menu for dinner, even though I have tenderloin steak in the fridge... OH and bought a roast for beef stew.... AND cubed steak for chicken fried steak... all sitting in there... calling my name....

Debating if 2AM is too early/late to take a pain pill..... not sure I want to chance waking up and spending the morning loopy..... 50/50 shot....

I have 2 boots to wear at night for my plantar fasciitis, but my toes go numb in both boots, so I can't wear them overnight...... I've been doing stretches, wearing the boot(s) during the day when I can, and rubbing tons of biofreeze and pain relief cream into my foot. I also wear compression socks when I can. My last option before a DR is something called Penetrex, which looks like another pain relief cream... any ideas would be greatly welcome!!!

My ortho doc gave me Voltaren after my foot surgery. It's like a topical form of Motrin you can rub on your feet when the Green Crack (aka Biofreeze, lol) stops working.

That, and ice, ice, baby!

Honestly, I never recommended or looked at OTC dewormers when I was vetting cuz I used the Rx kind based on a fecal...but if you think tapes then praziquantel, if you think rounds there's something called Excel...course being a vet Imma tell you give your vet a fecal sample and let him/her tell you what (and if) you need. !

It's crumbling a little when I wash it. I still have that soapy stuff so I've been using it. That's why in the picture her skin looks a little pink. I had just given her a scrub.

I would generally take the cat to a vet but they want to do a full check up. I might be able to talk them into a poo check. I haven't seen any signs of worms. I'm just worried about them spreading to my other cats. Who knows what else she could have.... saving up for the full check.

I have 4 birds, 2 are parakeets (keets) and the other 2 are hens.

Gurtrude is our first chicken, and she walked in to or garage soaking wet in Oct 2016. It took us 10 mins to catch her, and she hasn't regretted a minute since. She is an Easter Egger.

Lizbeth is our youngster, only 9 mos old, and a banty gold laced cochin. She shares the kitchen with Gurtrude, but they have their own pens right next to each other because Gurtrude likes grabbing Lizbeth's comb, so we want Lizbeth to have her own safe space. Gurtrude is also a small standard hen, so Lizbeth is only 2/3rds her size.

They are both good layers, so we get the equivalent of 9 eggs per week (Lizbeth's are half size). Surprisingly, it's not that expensive to keep them. We get the large bags of feed and keep it in an airtight container, and they get crickets and superworms daily, so about 2000 bugs each month for just under $80/month. Fresh fruits and veggies are pretty easy too, just get one or two of whatever, stick it on a skewer and set it up through the wire in the corner of their pens and they're happy little things.

I'm glad Gurtrude found us, she showed me how empty our menagerie was without chickens.
