OK, I spent 3 hours yesterday in 26 degrees and windy planting a 6 ft tall mimosa tree in front of the run for summer shade. Very pretty tree, most of the neighbors have them.

So, AFTER I plant it I look it up and realize that it's an invasive species and resprouts itself and the seeds can lie dormant for 50 years, and the saplings are very hard to kill. Usually, I check out everything before I plant, but since 4 neighbors have them I just didn't bother to research. And the tree was free from a neighbor who said "oh I have bunches of them in my yard!" I guess that was a clue

So maybe I'll dig it back out tomorrow

I agree with the post above. Enjoy your new tree. Since they are already in your neighborhood you are not introducing something new. From an ecology standpoint they are already there and have been for sometime. From a practical standpoint if they were as invasive as you fear, you wouldn't have had to plant that one, you would have had to remove stray saplings to place any coop, pasture, or out-buildings you do have.

Mow over or weed eat any seedlings that sprout underneath it and you will be fine.

I used to have mimosa in my yard and perhaps it was not ideal conditions or something but I never did get seedlings under them.

I like Mimosa trees and have one in my yard.My flock loves it.I try my best to get it to spread but the chickens won't let it,and the seedlings are often eaten or dug up.

Oh now that's Just Great! Pinky's girls eat the seedlings, perfect since I only want one.

BUT, Buck-wild-chick has a field of them, no I don't want that!

good grief, now I have to actually make a decision

thanks all

I have 5, but they were all purposely planted. I love the frothy leaves and the flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflys. By the way, my plant reference lists them as a species of acacia. If you didn't see a photo, the mimosa you researched might be a different plant.

I love them! I had some wonderful shade trees back in Georgia. Nearly everyone up here thinks you are talking about a brunch time cocktail.
