Anyone in GA/TN/NC Area Feel That Earthquake Awhile Ago?

Cyn, basically lives on top of a mountain so it is possible she felt a very small quake. Anywhere you have mountainous terrain you are gonna have shifting and quakes. I am too far away as is Scott to have felt even a small one, but Scott would likely feel a larger one up in Cyn's area. I am terrified of Tornados, Hurricanes to me are nothing as are small quakes since I lived in LA for a few years.

I did report the event so if they get back to me, we'll see if it was something other than a quake. And it could be, but I'm pretty sure it was a minor tremor of some sort. I am at almost 2000 ft elevation at my house. If I had been running around and busy/distracted, I may not have felt it at all or not been sure I did, anyway. The birds sure acted like they were completely freaked.

Animals are amazingly sensitive. I know I can tell how strong a thunder storm is going to be by watching our cows. If they stay in the pasture grazing in the rain and wind then all will be calm, but once they turn their tail to the wind and head for the fence line, I know I better take cover.

My dogs will let me know if it is going to be a bad storm, they tend to stay very close to me and get very nervous.

I am sure there was something going on in your area, your chickens felt it.

I didn't feel anything either...I was sitting on the ground, weeding a flower bed. The chickens didn't act unusual either. We got one heck of a windstorm yesterday afternoon, though, which definitely scared them.

Yup, I agree. Birds and other animals have amazing senses with regards to natural events like earthquakes, impending storms, etc. Remember the animals fleeing the coastline before the tsunami over in Indonesia a few years back (2004 to be exact)? Check out this article regarding animals and earthquake predictions, it's pretty interesting.

That was what was most interesting about this, the reaction of the birds. They never react to the jet traffic over our house or loud booms from trucks, etc. When I went to the coops because all my birds seemed to disappear and go silent, Nugget and her babies were frozen in place under the Firetower coop. Even after I spoke to her, she didn't move for a good 30 seconds. Then, when she did, she began cackling nervously and looking around like she does when she spots something that's a danger to her chicks.

I believe you Cyn, we too are quite near faults and I frequently feel tremors. I have one small picture on the bedroom wall that's my sanity checker- the smallest tremor will make it hang crooked! I straighten it about every 6 weeks when it tilts. The USGS never has a record of them, but I've lived in earthquake zones a long time and know the feel.

In Ecuador, the house we lived in was built with row after row of small pyramidical domes in the ceilings to better withstand the quakes. We lived right at the base of the Pichincha volcano, the ground rolled daily. Even in Austin we had tremors, it's on the Balcones Fault.

I always trust the animals instincts, too. Bluejays are the best snake alarm system ever.
