Anyone in WV???

Hi Tracy, I am really happy to find fellow West Virginians. My husband and I currently live in the Mid-Ohio Valley along the Ohio River (Vienna). We retired a few years ago and then he took another job. I’ve been very supportive of all the things he has wanted to do but soon we will be following MY dream and moving to the country and I will get my chickens (hoping for Wyandottes). I recently joined BYC to learn what all I need to bring chickens into my life.

Haven't been on here in a very long time but was wondering if there are any other WV folks here. I live between Huntington and Charleston WV. Close to the KY< OH area.

Looking for other chicken folks to chat with. I am now down to 5 chickens. Thanks to various varmits on our farm--- that we know of- 3 bobcats which were eliminated last summer. (one was in the chicken house when found) scared the husband pretty bad. lots of raccoons, possums, and 1 coyote (that was also eliminated) came out about 20 yards from the front door. Boy they are scary looking animals. I had an original flock of 42 and had kept adding on. Even building another coop and run just for silkies. (had about 26 silkies that disappeared due to predators, they only left a few feathers. Still not sure how or what got them.

Now since we are down to 5 my husband has asked that I not get anymore until I finish Nursing school in 2008. So I guess the spring of 2009 I will add to my 5 little hens.

Look forward to getting to chat with the folks on this board. I have learned alot on here. And read some great info and stories.

I even got eggs last years from KY silkies that hatched out some of the most beautiful birds. I think I got 18 chicks out of 22 eggs.
That was thanks to this board.

I just stumbled on that swap at the Southside Tractor Supply this past weekend. Came home with three chicks and three ducks, lol. There is a Facebook page, Parkersburg Animal Swap or something like that.[/QUOTE

Hi! And welcome!
I’m way up in Parkersburg, but come to Ripley regularly. I have quite a few bantam cochins and seramas right now, but no large fowl. As @Redhead Rae said, cochins are quite broody, I have 4 sitting in one nest box together at the moment, and tons of chicks already running around.

Raccoons are a major nuisance here too, and possums and hawks too! The coons used to come into my duck pen and eat their feed but not bother the ducks. But I have traps out all the time anyway.

My next move is likely to West Virginia. Its the halfway point between the 2 places I have lived almost my entire life. Sick of North Carolina Summers and Western NY Winters. Everyone I met from West Virginia when I was in the Navy were really cool guys.

By the way, the other posts you quoted were from 2007! Lol. This is a pretty old thread, so the people have changed a little.

When you move, are you still planning to stay in WV nearby? We moved up here from Kanawha county about 6 years ago.

We have a house with 5 acres in Beverly WV. We were hoping to move in October but with 2 deaths in the family that didn't happen. We are spending a quiet Christmas at the house to to re plan our next moves.
