Anyone in WV???

I really don't know yet. I'm just trying to find a place to get some chicks pretty soon. Probably some RIR, austrathorpes, wyondottes...basically anything. I have never had chickens before so I really don't know what I want. Any suggestions?

I suggest Naked Necks.
I'll be hatching small batches the next few weeks.

Is this the only breed that you have? Say I was to have 10 chickens would it be good to have all of them be different breeds?

Ideal Poultry has a wonderful special called a pullet surprise. While I'd love to encourage you to buy local, the pullet surprise is lots of fun. You order the chicks ($25 minimum order, which I think is 11 chicks) You don't know what you're getting, you just know that they are all going to be female. Its a lot of fun trying to figure out what you have. I did this when I first started, ended up with a Naked neck, Fayoumis, Minorca, Barred rock, Silver wyandotte, jersey giant and EE's.

That does sound really cool. That has been my plan to get one of all different types of breeds so that we can find ones we like. What has been your favorite breed that you have owned? Thanks for the advice!!!
you can also order specific breeds from Ideal. Its nice when you are getting started because they sex the birds so you can get all female if you don't want roosters (although in colder weather they toss in free roos for warmth on small orders)

my favorites... I like the heritage breeds. I loved the Buckeyes I used to have, and I love my Welsummers and Barnevelders. I also like playing with new colors.. which is why I have lavender ameraucanas. Be forewarned... chickens are an addiction. you always want more and different kinds!

Thanks for all your knowledge. I have lived on a farm my whole life and know nothing about chickens, but I am really interested and can't wait to get some. I think I will like have all different breeds and showing them off. Since you seem like you have raised many birds are there any breeds that you would stay away from?
