Anyone know about legbars

Yeah I think you got that right as no one on the BYC really new what Blue was at all. It was so hard to get him identified and some thought he was a mutt. But I bought eggs that were pure breed. Not that folk cant 'do you' I guess. But little Omlet is a Cockoo Maran and the only other egg from that batch to survive. - We boild them accidently in the early days and killed them! OOps our First eggs!and we mucked it up! Blue was Hatched day 27 and Omlet day 28. I think it is because I had the heat too low then because of what happened at the start and I was worried about the Temp too high? ! Well they are lucky to be here at all.

I am sooo wanting the blue eggs sooo much and am soooo glad my BLue is a proper EE - though some folk on the BYC said no as he didn;t have Green legs but Legbars are EEs and they have Yellow legs!!!!!

You say they are easy to get - perhaps they are in some places but not here in this part of Ireland. We NEVER see blue chicken eggs at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only Duck eggs!!!!!!!!!!

Oesdog -

If I remember correctly, male chicks have a spot on top of their heads, and female chicks don't.

Thanks that is great. - I know that you can tell the chicks from hatching and that is one reason I am liking them. Blue was a pale colour but had egyption eye thing going on.
I was sooo hoping he was a hen but sadly no.

Highlander it would be lovely to see your pics. - My roo has started to screech a lot! If we part him from Omlet the other baby chick ( She is Cukcoo Maran ) I had hoped to breed them so her baby pullets would lay green eggs but she is always ill.

Thanks for that I am glad I am not the only one here to have a Legbar I sooo want more!

Oesdog -

I think you are correct - from what I saw though I don;t remember Blue having a white spot. I do know the Pullet chicks are darker and the Males are yellow but striped and they have egyption eyes! I am really excited about this now. Maybe you can make your own?????????????????? I know I have been told that if I put the Legbar to the Maran the pullets from that match should lay green! It is wonderful to think of the great colours we could achieve. It is so sad that we only see those uniform brown PR / RIR eggs in the shops here. Who decided we didn;t want colours????????????????????????

Anyhow this chick has to go to the roost as it is late here we are about 5/6 hours ahead of you guys in US.

I found a pic from when they had just hatched. The 2 dark chipmunk patterened ones are the females, the lighter toffee coloured ones are the males. Very easy to tell apart as you can see. Ignore the yellow ones.

Highlander
At the moment Blue and the little cockoo Maran chick are in the house. They are both ill. Not sure what really. The wee Maran looks like she might die but then she has always been a weak chick. She is acting like she is drunk and falling over a lot. When I brought them in Blue was sneezing and he has really smelly mustard cloured watery poo. Oh well back to square one with these two.

I am treating with Vitamins/ Sugar water giving Egg and yogurt. A few folk have posted stuff on treatments for Cocci and the like but we can;t get a lot of what they can in the states it is hard to explain why we can;t go buy over the counter stuff like they are free to do? What do you use????????? Any Ideas as I don;t want to lose him now do I? I mean I wouuld be sad to lose the little Maran as she is such a trooper but I didn;t expect her to survive this long anyhow. So thats a bonus.

Thankfully I have never had to deal with Cocci, but if I do ever need medication for my chickens then I call my vet and tell them what I need. They are pretty good about prescribing stuff for me. I don't know how willing they would be to treat one of them in the surgery but I find that if I sound like I know what I am talking about when I call then they pretty much give me what I need. Have you called the vet?

Honestly there is little point - Last time I took them they looked at me like I have three heads! We live in a very rural area and well the attitude here is its a chicken look around you there are thousands of them!!!!!!!!!!! They have little value so many Vets either don;t treat them or don;t really know how to treat them. In the farms a chicken that wont make the grade is simply Necked! They don;t waist time on an unviable animal. Truth is you get better vet care for chickens in the city Vets! As there is a big culture for Pet BYC in the city now so Vets there are better trained and more tollerant of daft apaths who actually treat them more like pets than farm animals! It is probably the hardest domestic animal to get proper care for and then the Vet puts their arm in and a few other limbs just to ensure you don;t come back! It is hard to treat it viable if you can get a laying Pullet for a £5 or dead oven ready 3 for £10 from the store!!!!!!!!!! Last time I went to the vet he charged me nearly £100 - yeah Not good news!

I will phone a city Vet Monday and see if I can grab an off the counter product if they last that long! I am gonna be soooo

If I lose that darn Rooo Arnt I??????

Thanks Oesdog

I wouldn't bother with taking one in to be honest. I would just get on the blower tomorrow and phone around. Tell them you need cocci meds, be firm and assured. Make it sound like you know exactly what you are wanting. "Hi, I have some poultry with Coccidosis, could you fill out a prescription for some suitable meds for me please, I can be there at 3pm to collect. Thanks" or words to that effect. It works for me and my vet knows me now so doesn't ask any questions. Good luck.

I'll go see if I can find the info on the European Cream Legbars of Italy I think. They are not the same that are imported here in the states. Those have Top Hats bred into them. A true Cream Legbar doesn't. The top hat ones would have to be called something like Cream Legbarpol. There is more than 3 crossings there.

They are not EE's. They were bred for a specific purpose and to a standard. They are extremely rare. I want some and I am sure I will never have any unless I breed them myself. I have thought of it. They were bred with the Leghorn X Barred rock then with the Araucana not the Ameraucana.

I can't find the info but I originally found information on them through www.feathersite.com. They have a link to the Cream Legbars. Check that out.

Edited to add: Highlander I love your's too. Thought they were Bielefelders at first. So pretty.
