Anyone know about legbars

Actually I would like to have two of at least the basic breeds each. All the pretty fluffy butts about but I never have room for so many and have to settle for the best I can find close by. No one ships two or three pure breed chicks. Gloria Jean

News on the chick. - She is still hanging in there but the news isn;t good at all.
She is disabled - that is the issue. Betty has buldozed her over and hurt her and she couldn;t get to her feed and thats how she got more issues with the vitamins. She has gotten very weak. Blue also lost a bit of weight so he needs biult up too! Only poor Betty is the smallest in the other group now as well? Will need to watch her.

The big problem with Omlet is her breast bone is growing curved which throws the legs off. Eventually she wont be able to stand. - not good news for a big hen! I am wraking my brains on how I am going to hand feed her and make a cart for her! The Vet says a cull but she isn;t in pain and she isn;t doing any harm. The problems will come later when she needs to get her food and lay her eggs and roost. - All these issues we will have to think through with disability aids. Yeap HE said shes a cull - but she is also my pet and I love her. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am well used to disability here. DH says he wont kill her unless she is in pain and suffering. So after her issues with Betty we will have to watch what we do with her around other chickens. All the dreams of mateing her with Blue are out the window. But he loves her and she likes to watch him so we will try to keep her around as long as we can but no babies for her! I can;t see Gerty the other Maran wanting Blue near her so chances of that illusive Blue/green egg layer are farther and father away!!!! How can I get round this deformity???? Omlet needs to be able to lay and have dust baths and watch the others in the yard. - Oh well wheelchair bird?????? Is it better to try or die??????? She is happy right now. At least I can fix this bit for now and biuld her up a bit again.

I am looking into adding a few more chicks to my flock of 18. The Cream legbar / legbar is one. Anyone from NH or the east coast that raise's / sells them ? I checked on MPC & I didn't find them listed.

They are a rare breed and not found often in the states.
There are 3 sorts of Legbar - Cream, silver and gold these lay blue eggs. There is also the Cotswald Legbar (closely related) They lay Blue, green and pink pastel colour eggs.

Good luck with the chickens - You seem to have a good grasp of chicken math already -

I too got my hens in a funny kind of way. They were a gift as I was going through a cancer scare and they were to take my mind off it all!!!! - Well I am ok and they stayed and now I have 11 ( Not as many as you do but I am working on it! - I am trying to get Blue / green eggs in my flock so My blue the Roo is very important to me. They are very rare breeds though. I got a sellection of rare breed eggs to incubate and Blue and a Cuckoo Maran were the only two chicks to survive my Incubator ignorance!!!!!! I had a very hard time identifying what he was because no one knew and thought he was OEGB or some kind of Bantum. When I was at the Vet a few weeks ago - I was told this Vet was really good with chickens and so I went to see him he took one look at Blue and said oh a Leghorn??? NO I said LEGBAR yes leghorn he said again so I said NO actually CREAM LEGBAR!!!!!!!!!!! So I knew he was chicken illiterate!!!!! Showed him my baby Maran and he charged me £25 to tell me to kill her because her breast bone was curved? Lovely chicken man - NOT!!!!!!!! Anyhow the wee Maran is still here and I had to treat her myself as a lot of us chicken lovers end up doing. She is running about playing with Blue now:

There is nothing wrong with her at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She just needed more Vitamin B1 and B2 !!!!!!
I need her because I want to breed from her and she is adorable - I have another grown Maran but she isn;t nearly as good a temperament. I am hoping to get some Blue/Green egg layers in the next generation???? Like you I find the egg colours facinating and for some reason Blue eggs are not very common here at all.

Anyhow thats it really just keep at it!!!!!!!!

Oesdog - I am glad you like the cream legbar - few are full breed though so you need to be careful most are not 100% They are very rare indeed.
Good luck finding a supplier?
