Yesterday my daughter and I were cleaning the chickens when we noticed a large purple bump on one our chickens. It is at the base of the neck. I don't think its a broken wing. What is it and what can I do to help it heal.

Can you locate the crop? That is where the food and water goes after eating, drinking. It is more on the chickens right upper chest. It starts out in early morning flat and empty, slowly feeling up throughout the day. Feel some other's crops to compare. Not sure why it would blue, perhaps bruising or may be normal. Other concerns would be a leaking air sac or a cyst.

I thought maybe it was a full crop but was concerned about where it was sitting. I know they had just pecked happily at fallen Black Oil Sunflower Seeds which if it is the crop, would explain the coloring.

Have you inspected for mites or lice?

Have you inspected for mites or lice?

One of our birds has pulled out her saddle feathers, which I believe is due to mites or lice. As a result we bathed and dusted the lot, that's when we came across this lump. I might mention they had found some Black Oil Sunflower Seeds that had fallen out of the wild bird feeder. So it may be a full crop filled with the seed. It was squishy and felt like it had gravel in it.
