Thank you, thaiturkey. Those are very interesting links, and I will explore them further.

I name all my cocks after English kings. Currently, Alfred (a noble Saxon) reigns. He is a handsome Ameracauna. Yesterday, Edward I was dispatched to freezer camp; old age his only fault.

My 17 year old came to me and asked permission to curse. We discussed the issue and I pointed out that people view others who curse a lot as less intelligent. It does not make a person less intelligent if they curse, but that is how people perceive them. After giving him a few rules-no cursing in front of his sisters or any little children-I gave him permission to judge for himself if he should curse. He must not do it often because he remarked recently at how shocked his friends were when he said curse word.

Bringing this into the topic of the thread, some people wonder if a nonreligious person can bring up a moral child. When you remove salvation issues from conduct then you can have discussions about the pros and cons of actions and help your child make healthy decisions for themselves. Instead of making it more difficult, it is easier to discuss right or wong with older children when you remove the threat of eternal suffering.

With my oldest son, I would have had to discuss whether cursing was or was not a sin and if he was being a good witness toward others. Chances are my oldest son would have snuck around and done what I didn't want him to do and then would have felt guilty about it later. He didn't seem to come to me as often when he had a problem as his siblings do now.

My relationship with my younger children is far different and better then it was with my oldest.

No-one can doubt it. My children were baptised into the C of E as babies, the done thing in the family in those days and I was happy to do it. However, they have not had religion thrust upon them since and have shown no interest in it. They are very different in character. He's a city boy go getter and she's a country and nature loving non-competitive type. Both have astoundingly high moral standards. I'm not claiming credit for that but let's say that children learn by example and encouragement better than by fear and bullying.

Corporal punishment was mentioned recently. I once raised my hand in anger to my young son and spent days in remorse. I never even considered it again. Children do naughty and annoying things. It's natural. They just aren't accustomed to their parents' own interpretation of how they should behave and their parents may not be right anyway. Hitting them might win a battle but it can lose the respect that parents must deserve from their children.

Here and in a recent conversation I've had people say "I'm not religious, I'm faith-based". These people attend church at least weekly, and are self declared Christians, and say that faith and God are important in their lives. I'm wondering how this is not religious. Is this a new description that some churches are using to distance themselves from the term religious? Has the term religious come to have negative connotations? What is up with this? If it was just one person in a single place saying this I would have just brushed it off, but to have two people in very different contexts use almost exactly the same words, made me very curious.

My dictionary says that religious means "relating or manifesting faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity".

To many, religion means being practicing a certain brand of faith and subscribing to it's tenets. If one attends the Holy Purple Church every Sunday because they like the sermon and the people, but don't wear purple undergarments, paint their living room green, and have multi-colored flowers in their garden, can they really be considered a member of the Holy Purple Church?

Christianity is a religion, period. That is it. Christianity has a founder, holy scriptures, a set of conduct, a view on a supreme being and a belief in the afterlife. that is religion.

I found a site but I have to warn you, it is arrogant. Apparently because Christians consider their faith based on truth, some Christians do not think that they have a religion. All other faiths are 'man made' so are religions. The Christian who states that he does not follow a religion is just finding a new way to say, "My faith is true but yours isn't."

Thankfully, most Christians understand that their faith fits the definition of religion.

Even though I know that most of us know this I feel like I should add that most Christians do not think like this guy. The article that I linked to is troubling.

He has done a lot of work on his muscles though, hasn't he? LOL Ignore the muscle man and read the article.
