I abandoned the Catholic Church not long after my "First communion". I have questioned everything since. I figured that kings and noblemen created "God" in order to keep the peace because they have seen what happens when nature worshipers get fed up with the power structure. I was completely okay with being an atheist until I was 21. I was all alone in my backyard (before chickens) and I took a leap of faith. I said out loud "Hey God!, this book says I'm not supposed to ask for proof from you, but if you truly exist, then you created me this way and so you know that I will listen if you will just give me a sign, some kind of sign that I will know". Can you guess what happened next? Yeap, the same that always happens, Nothing. Nothing at all. About three weeks later, I was struck by lightning by the funniest acting cloud I've ever seen. I wasn't hurt, but a good skeptic might think that my synapses were damaged by the event. Anyway, my family is Catholic, but I prefer a more direct approach. My answers may not be your answers, but if you seek, you shall find. I hope that if you get struck by lightning, that you survive long enough to enjoy what you discover!

I found this "book review" of the Bible some years ago and it just really makes so much sense and actually mirrors so much of what I believe about the Bible and the Christian God. Of course, since I don't believe in the Bible or the Christian God, it is very easy for me to read this review with an open mind.

Anyway, just thought some of you all might be interested. Here is the link - http://www.stormy.org/bible.htm

Not sure if anyone else feels the same way as I do as that I just jumped to the end to post my thoughts and beliefs. I'm not sure how I would classify myself but at any rate it's not any type of organized religion. I believe that every living thing has a spirit, including plants, trees, insects, animals of all kinds, and humans. I believe in an after life that our spirit goes to once we die, which is our true life. The human existence is a learning process for the spirit in which we are reincarnated many times to learn something new and different. As for a god, my theory on god is that it is an energy, which as it grew became self aware and learned that it could create anything. In turn anything that it has created has its energy in it, which is what the spirit is made of...all connected and part of "god".

No, you are not alone. In fact this has caused some friction for us in our family. Our nieces both came to us (at different times) and asked us if we would donate to their "mission" to China to save the poor children there. We tried to side step the issue, since we knew that we would be judged harshly for our differing opinions, but were backed into a corner so we explained (as nicely as we could) that we both had the utmost respect for the spiritual beliefs of the Chinese and had actually incorporated a lot of their beliefs into our own belief system and felt like, if anything, we westerners could learn more from them than they could from us. So we couldn't possibly donate to a cause we felt could cause more harm than good.
One niece was very understanding and open to what we had to say and even said she looked forward to learning a lot about their culture too, the other still doesn't speak to us except to send religious cards every christmas.

Oh well! At least it feels better finally having it out in the open.

Nope not alone! Well said Sunnydawn!

Missionaries are at the core of my disdain for some sects of religions! It is my opinion way to many grand societies on every continent have been destroyed through missionaries.

I think not asking for proof of God's existence is another way that religion keeps their members from asking too many questions.

I was always taught that testing God was a sin and if you asked him to prove that he existed then you didn't have faith. That just doesn't make sense to me. It seems like a way to keep followers from thinking too much.

In defense of Catholics, the Catholic Church does say that its followers don't have to take the Genesis account as literal. If I remember correctly, Pope John Paul II believed in evolution. I don't know where the current Pope stands on the issue.
