Because most of us had to wade through the morass of organized religion to reach our current place. It's a place for sharing how you got here.

There is no real reason for a priest to remain celibate. Every excuse is a fabrication to justify a political act from 800 years ago. And no one knows if Jesus was married or not. Everything written about him was written several decades if not centuries after he died and then edited to fit church dogma - not the other way around.

Check your history - ~ 39 Popes were married.

Priests became celibate for political reasons primarily, not religious or faith reasons. The Church wanted income. If priests had kids their inheritance went to their kids, not the church. This actually did not happen until about the 12th century (1139 specifically). So priests were not required to be celibate for longer than they have been required to be celibate.

Everyone seems to forget that little tidbit of information.

Only Fundamentalists are 'Bible only' religions. I agree the Catholic church has many good traditions as well as some illogical stances. There are very liberal Catholics (Andrew Greeley) as well as very conservative Catholics (Mel Gibson). I dont know a single Bible only religion which has that spectrum of members. Bible only religions dictate that it is their way and that is the only way.

Again, not religious, just educated about them.

Actually, in a way the trolling person has a point. For instance, let's have a thread about "not having chickens".

Do you have chickens?
Nope.
Me neither.
OK, bye.

So I'm seeing this as more of a thread where different religions and non-religiousness are getting discussed without anyone having the hammer put down on them as being wrong or sinful or darn. I like it.

Twenty dollars says the auto-moderator changes my word above to "darned" or something similar.

Edited to add: Yup, it did it. Gosh, I hope I'm not "darn".

My Thoughts,

I was raised Catholic but I am what people call non-denominational and I do attend an Christian Church. I believe in God and that Jesus is his Son. I believe that we are all held accountable for how we live our life and that we will face judgement when we die. I also believe that God is a merciful God and that anyone who seeks forgiveness will receive it. I believe the bible is the word of God is intended to lead us through life.

I do not believe that there is one denomination that is more right than the other, but I do believe that we are all called to be Christians and to live our lives as an example to those who do not believe.

Is this religion or just a spirtual belief? I don't know, I just wanted to put my thoughts out there.

Thanks for reading.

Teresa

We are pretty flexible on the topics on this thread. If you want to start a nonreligious topic, please do so.

I think that if you have a founder, a holy book, a set destination for life after death and a belief in how you should act then you are following a religion. You might feel less religious then spiritual but you are still in a religion.

That doesn't mean that you aren't welcome to post here.

I think that some Christians don't feel that they have a religion because they have a relationship with their founder but I am sure that all religious people have relationships with who or what they worship.

I agree, that you are still in a religion belief. Of course there are Christians out there that have a relationship with other things besides their founders. It is who we are and what we do for others and how we interact with people.
You are still welcome, Christian or not, denomintal or not!

OM,,,
Just had to quote you! In my humble opinion you are right on with your answer. Simple, eloquent and a crystal clear reason for the discussion of religion on a non religious thread.

Just spectacular! thank you..
(I am fortunate enough to have been born and raised. "spiritually free" and did not need to "wade very deep into the morass of organized religion" to reach my spiritually blissful state of mind. Of course one still gets plenty of "wading" when attempting to comprehend the mind set of religious folks.)

ON

Religious people talk about the nonreligious all the time. Because of the evangelical nature of some religions, they do speak a lot about how to reach nonreligious people. So, of course, nonreligious people will bring such an issue to a discussion because it impacts their lives.

No one on this thread is trying to change anyone's opinion nor do I think that we are angry toward any particular religion.
