Anyone preparing for Sandy?

Not worried about loose items, all put away. Bot I have this 60' Bull Pine that is giving me the heebie jeebies. The house is well within range of the drop zone.

We've got a pine too that is probably closer to 70+ft (tallest tree in our "forest") and is so old that all the branches have died except for the last 10-15 ft. It is so top heavy that we're worried about it. Depending on the wind, it would land either on the garage or directly on the chicken run, completely crushing it.

Here in WV, I'm more concerned with snow. I have heard (from the local weathermen) we will get 4 to 8 inches of snow...then about 12 hours later, they changed it to 1 foot to 3 1/2 feet of snow depending on where you live. I just hope I can get out and get to work. Not to mention, I really hope and pray the power stays on. That bad wind storm we had in July was enough!!! I will be "winterizing" the chicken coop tomorrow so hopefully my chickies will be ok during this monster storm...just in time for Halloween...So I guess the name fits!! lol

I hope everyone stays safe!

1d3, that forecast of snow with the leaves on the trees is very worrisome. That's what we got hit with 10/29/'11 - brought a large maple down on the house and we were without power for 7 + days. This year we have a generator (purchased new yet in immediate need of repair

.) big enough to run the freezer and sump pumps. Everything is battened down. Feed and food well stocked. We even have motel reservations starting on Wed 'just in case'. Last year after about 3 days, this old man was sort of stinky, and the Princess no longer wanted to snuggle for warmth.

I wish everyone well during mother nature's coming wrath.

I am still a little skeptical that we in southern Ontario will see much of this storm but the forecasts seem a little ominous at this point so we started today putting away loose tools and chairs, filling watering cans for water for the chickens, ducks, and geese. Since we still have most of Monday before it gets to us I will put lots of water containers in the coop then see if I can corral the ducks and geese into their new coop...they seem to prefer to sleep outside but if it does get really nasty I will have to put them away. Also we will have to go to the grocery store and stock up on some essentials and no cook meals. If we lose power we can use the bbq after storm passes and we heat mostly with wood so we will be fine in that area. We also have several large trees very near the house, coops and our greenhouses so if the worst happens this isnt going to be pretty!

In Ontario you probably will get the "leftovers." But still that could be lots of rain and some stiff winds, so IMO it's always best to err on the side of caution.
For WV, the forecasts all talk about the winter storm front coming from the NW, so there could be some heavy snow there... I hope you all in the inland areas are battened down and ready for whatever happens! Here on the coast I'm waiting for the wind. Was on the roof yesterday patching cracks, and I'm about to head back up to trim back some shrubs that reach up higher than the edge of the roof on my little cottage.

Best to all. We can hope and pray that this turns out to be less than the worst case picture the weather people are giving.

Getting ready for Sandy took me a lot longer than I thought it would, but thankfully it's all done now, and the rain held off long enough for me to finish! So I'm happy but I must say I have the saddest group of chickens ever! This morning I let them out while putting the finishing touches on weather-proofing their coop and run. Then I changed their water, topped off their feeder, and brought out a special treat...a flock block, which I hoped would keep them amused while they ride out the storm. All four hens came running to see what the treat fairy brought...lol...so I took advantage of the situation by closing the door behind them. It took about 15 minutes and then Cornelia decided to go back to the yard. Uh oh. She stopped in her tracks, looking at the door as if she could will it to open...lol...then she started to honk. I think the honking is chicken-speak for "Houston, we've got a problem..." because next thing I know, all four chickens are honking at the door. And LOOKING at me with the saddest faces! And you know they didn't understand why I didn't open the door for them like I always do...oh, the guilt! Let's hope this storm passes quickly, while my chickens still love me!

...and on a more serious note, good luck to everyone out there...stay safe!

Sez, I'm waiting until they roost tonight to lock them up. I threw down some straw and a little bit of the goat's hay to they can scratch around tomorrow. Our coop is on the smaller size for the number of chickens we have, so it is going to be tight, but they have plenty of food and water in there. The past few hours they have all been huddled against the coop in the run, so I'm thinking they can feel lit coming.

I've been going non-stop for 2 days getting ready, hopefully it will pay off.

The chickens seem to be happy enough just hanging out with the goats (they just started riding around on them a few days ago, which the goats seem to enjoy just as much as the chickens do). I'm not going to lock them in, but I'll be scattering feed in the straw to keep them amused.

I'm kind of glad I don't have goats now. When I did, it got crowded when I had to coop everyone up in the barn during bad weather.
The waterfowl are out in their pen till late tonight. Then they'll be sharing the barn with the chickens till the storm passes over.
My chickens went out in the run but came inside on their own (there's a side-hatch door with a ramp that leads down into the barn -- it's built into a hillside) after about 3pm because the wind had picked up a little and it was raining. They probably will not want to go outside tomorrow when the winds are 40mph or 55 mph with possible 75 mph gusts. Neither will the waterfowl, who will just hunker down in the shavings and snooze while the chickens pick their way around them.
