Anyone set yesterday or today?

At this point I am lucky to have 1 still air because my husband is so against this whole chicken thing. I am sneaking this one

I am a hand turner since I stay home during the day it has to work out for me because I couldn't spring the extra $50 for the turner. He would just die if he found out how much I paid for my Maran eggs. He has his hobbies and I have mine. I am following the don't ask, don't tell policy.

All of that said his is very supportive of my girls when he gets a fresh omelet or home made breakfast.

Well I am off to school, I have a huge test tonight.

I set eggs both Tuesday and today. And I'll be setting more tomorrow as well. I'll have 3 incubators going by tomorrow night. I have 2 LG's and 1 Hovabator.

In my incubators I have/will have:

12 EE standard eggs
12 EE bantam eggs
9 Gold Laced Cochin eggs
18 Red Cochin eggs
8 Frizzle Cochin eggs
6 Mottled Cochin eggs
3 Black Mottled D'uccle eggs
3 Blue Mottled D'uccle eggs
3 Porcelain D'uccle eggs
3 Self Blue D'uccle eggs
3 Mille Fleur D'uccle eggs
2 Red Pyle OEGB/EE mix eggs
2 White Leghorn/EE mix eggs
24 Guinea eggs
9 Columbian Wyandotte eggs

I think that's it. LOL

Not a good idea to put the maran's eggs under her at this point, IMO.

One, there's already bacterial contamination on this hen's underside.

Two, her eggs are due to hatch soon. Unless you remove those, you'll have eggs hatching under her, and when they do hatch, she'll probably leave the new eggs to go with the new chicks.

Three, if you did remove the older eggs, she still may not keep setting another 3 weeks. Or, she may do what one of mine did when she'd been setting 3 weeks before she finally got some eggs. When the first 2 hatched, she said, "Yippee, I'm done!" and left the other eggs to get cold and die.

Four, if these eggs were shipped, odds are they'll do better in an incubator. Did you check the air cells for damage? If they have damaged air cells, you may need to hatch them upright, in a carton, tipping the carton to turn the eggs.

So, do what you want, but if they were mine, I've leave them in the bator, and let mom finish hatching the ones that are almost done.

Good luck, whatever way you decide.

I set on Tuesday, yesterday and more tonight

D.Bear- GREAT advice. I love your rationale I am all about information. I have never done this before and I am really getting excited.

As far as checking the air sac on the eggs. I guess I need to find a candler because I made one yesterday out of a box and my brooder light and it wasn't good the box caught fire...SO I will go get a bright flashlight and work it out from there. I am really not a dingbat but I saw the wooden boxes with the light so I thought I would give it a whirl. The box wasn't totally on fire just smoking a bit...that is enough.

I put the eggs on their sides as the incubator said and now I hope I didn't do the wrong thing.

I am so excited we have so many people joining this group. YEAH!!! I am EGGCITED

Autozone has these great little 9 LED flashlights for 3 or 4 bucks, up by the registers. They take 3 AAA batteries, I use rechargables, they do go down pretty fast. But they're bright enough to candle with, (with new batts, or freshly re-charged ones, not so good when they get weak) however, if the eggs are really dark, you may not be able to see much, no matter what you use. If you shine it in the big end, at a kind of sideways angle, you might be able to see the air cells. I make a circle with my hand around the flashlight end, and press the egg against the circle of my thumb and index finger. (In a darkened room, of course) I hold the egg big end up, and move my hand around the egg, rather than jar the egg around a lot.

Air cells get easier to see as the eggs develop. Sometimes they're really difficult to spot in a fresh egg. The ones I had with broken air cells were pretty easier to see than normal ones, though, there was an easily visible, free-floating bubble. Others were kind of spread out like an amoeba.

You could also use a compact florescent bulb in the box candler, they don't get so hot. They make some that are the equivalent of 100 watt, and 150 watt incandescent.
