I'm putting eleven leghorn eggs in my bator today. These eggs are from yesterday and today. I got these eggs free from my neighbor. I would of hatched my own eggs but my brahmas have decided they don't want to lay.
I just set mine yesterday, but I'm not the most hopeful... They were shipped and 8 of the 12 had ruptured air sacs, the other 4 have dislocated air sacs. Also they were shipped over Labor day weekend, so they sat at the post office all day Sunday and Monday. I really hope they hatch though, it was $40 a dozen and the parents are just beautiful, they are from High Quality Silver Laced Cochin Bantams. I can't wait to candle and find ou how they are doing.
I dont hold out much hope either as my bator is manumatic and I can only turn 3 times a day (due to me being elsewhere)
but lets be optomistic hope everyone has some luck
Mine is a Hova Bator 1602N, it's about as cheap as you can go. A plain styrofoam incubator without turners or a fan. I turn mine twice a day for sure and sometimes 3 times a day and they hatch just fine. In fact I have left for vacation leaving them unturned for 2 days and it didn't affect their hatch rate at all. So don't worry about turning, my first time incubating I got a 95% rate. Thats better then what a lot of other people get with much more expensive incubators. What kind of frizzle chickens are you hatching? The frizzles always look so neat, I only have one though and it's a white frizzled cochin.
I have some lavendar frizzle pekin and black mottled pekin (x3 of each). Mine is not a hoverbator, but is polystyrene with built in fan and halogen lamp. i keep a dish of water in it to keep humidity at 60%
Do you always keep your humidity at 60%? I used to keep it at 50%, but I think that was too high and a few people recommended dry incubation, supposedly it gets you better hatch rates. I'm currently keeping mine at 35% for the first 18 days.
well, i have some speckled sussex due to hatch the 13th and the 14th (2 separate clutches).
on sept. 7th, i put in 18 sebright bantam eggs (10 silver sebright eggs and 8 golden sebright eggs). thought i was gonna pack it in for the winter but saw the sebrights and decided 1 more time.
i have a farm innovator 4200 incubator (styrofoam incubator with a hard plastic outer shell, built in hydrometer, and 2 thermometers) with an automatic egg turner. so here's hoping that i get a few more than my 2 previous hatches. i think i'm gonna have to watch the humidity more closely, as i only got 1-2 chicks from those hatches.
well i have read so much conflicting info on the web, some say dont use humidity (breeders) and others say 60-65%. I have usually just shoved a sponge in there and top up every few days with luke warm water. with 60% humidity been getting about 82% success rate.
But going to try without any as you suggest to see what happens. Be a good little experiment LOL
What is your humidity, when you had problems? My last set was a disaster, I set 12 RIR, and only got one hatch. 5 were quitters on day 20!!!! That was 60% humidity day 1-18 then 70% days 19-21
