Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

We have a duckling! And 3 more are trying to get out to play. All but 1 have pipped. This is so cool! Our first time experiencing this live.

Thank you all for sharing the excitement with me of our son returning from Afghanistan. It was a stressful year, but we are so thankful for all our service members who sacrifice for our freedom and well being. I can't wait to have him home in our arms.

2... we have 2 ducklings! This one is really dark. Sooooo cute together. They found each other and are snuggling.

Yea on the ducks!! Dumb question, but is it like chickens hatching? Pip, zip and pop!?

I'm so thankful for your son and you. Glad he is home safe. My brother is a submariner. And that's stressful enough.

We ended up with 2of the broody chicks. I candled the last one..it didn't look right. So I made a tiny hole in the air sac... nothin...so we carefully peeled shell of..it was malpositioned..it didn't make it, even though the yolk was fully absorbed. Dang it. But we moved her and the babies to a smaller coop. She we slipped one of the week old ones I hatched out and she took it right in. We checked on them a couple times and all looks good! Sat we go into lockdown again. The duck eggs are a week in, so we added a couple more chicken eggs... and sugar is now setting on 6 BLRW eggs. !!

Molly, I haven't seen chicken eggs hatch as our first hatch was with a broody. I imagine it's the same. Most of them pipped early on Monday and zipped and popped starting yesterday evening. I couldn't believe how quickly a couple of them got out, and others took much longer.

One little ducky needed help. She started to zip first, but couldn't progress. She was so vocal and kept pushing her bill out in the same area, that she actually scrapped her bill on the shell and was bleeding. So in the wee hours, I broke some shell pieces off and she finally got out. Even though she started the hatch and had quite a big hole in her shell for at least 15 hours, she was not ready. She had an ugly bulging belly that looked aweful. I was hoping that it was just that she hadn't absorbed all the yoke yet so I put her in a bowl on a warm wet paper towel sprayed with vetericin and dabbed little vetericin on her bill. That was at about 2 in the morning.

I went to bed at that point with 8 hatched ducklings and 4 to go. 3 of the 4 just pipped yesterday so hopefully they will hatch today. One still hasn't done anything.

I woke to find "Lucky" doing great in her bowl. Her bill and belly look much better. They are all little fluff balls doing their funny ducky things and annoying each other.

I have 2 broody ducks in my basement infirmary being treated for bumble foot who I'm going to try to give the ducklings to. Wish me luck!

The chicken eggs that I had in the incubator got moved to a broody yesterday because I was worried that the humidity that I needed for the ducks so suddenly would be too much for the chicks who weren't quite ready yet. So, I still won't see any chicks hatch.

Here's a pic of our first mama and chicks. They are doing great.
