Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

I thought I would post a picture update of Dixie and her brood. So my main support BYC peeps could follow a bit on our brood. Today I brought Dixie up closer to the house and the gardens. I got Dixie as a two year old hen and previously I think she was kept mainly in pens. So I call her a bit " institutionalized". She likes the feel of the coop and run more than free ranging I think...it's what she knows. With the help of my daughter and some protesting by Dixie we got them under cover of some peonies, hostas, and poppies and the deck...and I think Dixie is enjoying it now. LOL. I'll help her get the chicks back down to the coop. But for now I can't help feeling this is good for them.
So cute together. They are a colorful family.

Thank you Molly. And Thank you for making me feel welcome on your nice Hatch-a-long thread. It was a pleasure being a part of this one.

Best to you all on raising up your chicks this summer and may you all be enjoying more eggs this October!

Same here! Thanks for sharing this experience with me everyone!

Excitement for the Day - 3 chicks were missing from their mama hen. I called everyone out to look for them including our dogs. We were looking all over and getting very worried not seeing any sign of them. Then, *Sammy* to the rescue! He loves "his" chicks. Sammy found them down a drainage tile that had it's cover pushed off. He smelled them and sat down at the hole looking all protective. I finally noticed him and went to check it out - sure enough, there they were and he wouldn't budge until we got them out. What a great dog!

This was my First Hatch-a-Long, Too! I just loved it. What a great group! We should search each other next May if we're in need of some more chooks!

Joyful, That would get my heart a pumping too! Everyday I go and check on Dixie and the chicks. She was taking them away from the coop quite a bit today in the woods and under the cover of the ferns and weeds. Those little chicks catching bugs like pros and Dixie catching some for them too. She's turning out to be a good Momma. They are standard Cochin mixes...and it won't be long that they won't be fitting underneath her wings at night. There was a bit of a tussle going on underneath that Broody tonight and she was just a rockin' back and forth as they were vying for the "Good Spot" LOL. So funny watching her sit there patiently getting jostled.

My 12 Bresse chicks came home from school today. They are 3 weeks old today. We set 15 eggs May 3rd. One failed to develop, one developed but failed to hatch. And one hatched and failed to thrive. The rest are strong and healthy and so so friendly. They came home to hatch over Memorial Day weekend and then went back to school for the last three weeks. So great to have them back with us. I bought caponizing tools - we'll see if I dare. In any event they'll head to freezer camp in September and October. Next week we'll build them a coop. For now they are in a brooder in the garage. Fun to have babies again!

i am glad you joined! as well as everyone else too! it was such an exciting time, going through candling and then hatching! How are the babies now?
my silkie and her babies are doing wonderful! I had 2 chicks hatch 3 days ago (that I took from the broody to put my blrw eggs under) i tried to give them to her but she didnt want them...they are now in the brooder with the much larger chicks, but they are all getting along well!

I had a duck hatch this morning!! we thought they were pekin or pekin cross with?? but these look like baby swedish... idk.. hopefully when they get a little bigger!

I also heard chirping under Sugar this morning.. so she has at least one baby and she was ****** when I tried to look! I may try to slip the 2 other chicks under her tonight.. we'll see how she is doing with hers.
