Anyone tried Purina’s new high protein feed?

Purina is big enough to have a strong advertising department that will home in on trendy things like BSF to get your attention. Truth be known, BSF is too expensive to put into chicken feed in any meaningful concentration.

But, Purina is also big enough to have the very best poultry nutritionists in the world, plus the best laboratories and testing facilities to back them up.

Purina is also so big that they have the most to loose if they put an inferior or dangerous product on the shelves.

I trust them.

About 5 years ago they came out with Purina Hearty Bee. It was the best ever bee food made by their worlds greatest animal food and lab experts. The main ingredient was dried sprayed poultry blood. It was a total disaster.

Not all have a local mill. I wouldn't use it because I don't use layer, but if I did, I would give it a try. 19% is really good for layer feed.
True, but some may not think about that option until a dashing, floppy-hatted redneck throws it out there. We don’t actually have a local mill but the mom & pop feed store gets their feed from a smaller feed mill in AL.

I bought a new bag of Purina Flock Raiser today and felt I hit the jackpot with a 2023 Jan 3 date…

And it’s still $21….

LINK HERE for those interested in their product page. Looks like a rebranded "Feather Fixer" with a new buzz word and a slightly altered feed recipe. The fact that Met levels remain at the bare minimum 0.3% is all i need to see to know I won't use it except in desperation. Good chance the Met levels aren't high enough to make use of the rest of the amino acids in the feed, meaning increased nitrogen in the poops, usually expressed as ammonia.

Not interested in the chain store or the mega manufactures. I use local feed stores who sell Lone Start Feed, a locally manufactured layer feed out of Nacogdoches, Texas. Been using the same feed for 10 years. I sell every egg my girls produce and have zero problems.

It's winter here in northern MI and I was letting my 8 hens rest from laying eggs. One hen began laying eggs again, about 25 of the last 30 days! In December I purchased a 50 # bag of higher protein feed. It was 18%, v. the usual 16%. These are awfully close in protein content when you consider the margin of error when calculating nutrient amounts. I would buy it again but the store didn't have it. Did this encourage one hen to lay eggs? Don't know.
