I think I'm ending up with 13 from 4 different breeders (may get a few more.. just haven't decided if I need to or not)..
I couldn't get any from the 4 corners like you did.. but supposedly none of mine are related!.. at least the breeders have all told me that the eggs are coming from unrelated pairs.

are you using the shell membrane for the DNA testing?

Yes I am. I have the eggs all marked with ID's and will place legbands with the corresonding ID on each chic. I could tell 3 apart and keep them straight, but I doubt I can do the same with a potential 11. I'll be seeing stripes in my sleep!

I doubt all 13 of mine will hatch since they are shipped eggs.. but heck.. even if a third hatch it would be too many for me to try to keep straight without leg bands!

Which leg bands are you using?.. I figured I would probably just use colored zip ties since i have no idea which leg bands (or which size) I would need!

I have been giving the legband idea some thought and colored zip ties would work. I was thinking of the type that you close a turkey cooking bag with. Something with a flat surface that I could mark with a sharpie. I'll be looking at the hardware stores. I did look at legbands for tom's (turkey's) and I think that they are a size #16. The DH suggests I paint a toenail for indentification. The problem I have with that is....I'm not a girly girl and only own 1 bottle of nail polish. Tis true. And I think its about 10 years old...yuck.

it's not your fault.. it's just that emus are aliens.. they have taken control of your brain to get you to hatch more of their kind... I am convinced that they are bent on world domination...

I have often used colored thick velcro bands that they use for organizing computer wires. I even have used it on my adult emus.

I weighed my second three this morning..

B-1 day 1 weighed 534 grams
day 7 weight: 522 (12 grams lost or 2.25%)

B-2 day 1 weighed 539 grams
day 7 weight 525 (14 grams lost or 2.6%)

A day 1 weighed 625 grams
day 7 weight 615 (10 grams lost or 1.60%)

the target % loss per week (if my math is correct) is 1.875%

since i am getting the feeling mine is a placement issue in the incubator (proximity to the fan) I am moving them around a bit every day from their original placement.. depending on what changes I see next week will tell me if i am right or not

luckily it's early on in the hatch.. so I have plenty of time to work on it!
