Anyone up for a Hatchalong?

Thank you! What a great help you are! I blew the egg. There were yellow chunks and liquid, maybe early death or infertile? I'm not experienced enough to say but I did get a video!

I do.. you can clean them rather well (even with a small pin hole like I put into the shell to blow them out.. link in my signature).
Just because the emu egg is bad the shell still has plenty of uses for carving or decorative "jewelry box" type of containers or just for display.

but if there's a dead chick in the shell you would have to make a judgement call to see if you want to deal with removal of the chick and attempting to save the shell.

when the egg JUST starts to stink you might have a little bit of a pressure buildup inside the egg.. I like to catch them before they are close to exploding.. when I drill the teeny hole the ones with pressure buildup will hiss at me when the gasses escape. If you wait too long to attempt to drill it could very well go from just a hiss of escaping gasses to a blowout.. which wouldn't be any fun if you're the one who is doing the drilling!

just remember to wash with a detergent and rinse.. rinse.. rinse.. and then sniff the egg.. if there is an odor use something non acidic (I like Oxine) to help with odor removal and further disinfecting
things like vinegar or lemon juice will eat away at the shell.. so I avoid those for cleaning

I'm looking for some advice. We have an EMU egg, just one. My son brought it home from school in the hopes that we could hatch it. So I did what any hatching addict, um I mean, good mother would do. I ran right out, bought an incubator and ordered an egg scale. I waited a whole day for the egg scale and then put the egg in the bator (patience is not my strong point). Here we are on day 11 and still no scale. We are rolling this thing constantly and temperature has held steady at 96 - 98 on the floor of the bator. I have not measured humidity ~I was really planning on that scale. I added water on day one and day 9. Is there anything else I can be doing? I REALLY wish that darn scale were here so I could see my weights.

Oh, and the egg is in a little giant that I did not alter. So if I do see that it's progressing, do I need to change that?

woa, I have 12 eggs bad ones on a ice chest to blow, but they stinkso much that I do not know how to handle yack...... any suggestions, they are 100 days old, othersare 1 years old and others 51.. what to do... ah my weeglers are jummping and you can hear them tappinggggggggg

most of us haven't added water to the bators.. remember emus are from a pretty dry climate.. so extra humidity may not be needed and can possibly cause the egg to retain too much weight

for those of us who have modified the LG bators.. we felt it was necessary to give the chicks more headroom.. I leave most of my emu chicks in the bator for 24 hours or so depending on how the chick is doing.. so they need the extra space.. remember though that modifying the bator will alter your temps.. so they would have to be closely monitored if you do make the modifications

Congrats Yinepu! How many have hatched so far. I can't keep up. Imagine this thread three years from now when all or emus are mating and laying! Yikes.

well.. if you decide to keep them and blow them out TAKE THEM OUTSIDE to do it.. remember.. if they stink that much in the bator your house WILL stink if you try blowing them all out in the house

I take mine outside to blow them out.. only bring them back inside to wash them

the year old eggs should be dried up inside.. at least any eggs I have let sit for that long end up drying up and some even rattle when I shake them
the 100 day old eggs are liable to blow up when you drill a hole.. which is another reason to take them outside.. remember to wear old clothes when handling those stink bombs.. just in case they do blow up on you
the 51 day olds shouldn't be as bad.. but then again it depends on how long they were stinking.. if they just started to smell they should be fine.. but if they have been stinking for weeks you can be sure that there is some pressure buildup from the gasses.. so use caution

I have a strong stomach.. so I can clean out even the smelliest eggs.. not everyone can handle the smell though

you could try placing them inside a ziplock bag while drilling the hole.. just in case they do explode .. at least a plastic bag should help contain the mess if they do explode
