When I first started keeping chickens I only gave them Purina feeds. Then I thought "Gee, me and the rest of the family are making do with generic brands of everything else for ourselves. Well, the chickens can too!"
And honestly, I haven't really noticed any difference in the chickens or their eggs no matter what they eat. The main difference is in my wallet.
If I were rich (I'm not) I would get the finest organically-grown feed ever milled, and have my butler serve it in the chickens' silver feeders.
As for storage, it may depend on your area & climate. I kept getting bags of feed with bugs & larvae in them until my feed store started keeping them in a cooler place. If you have to get several bags at once, perhaps it would be better to keep them indoors until needed.
