Anyone use wood ashes?

I had read somewhere about using wood ashes for the birds dust bathing area. Anyone do this?
Also, could wood ashes be used in deep litter to keep down odor and bugs?
Just curious since we have lots. I use a little in my compost and since the coop litter will be compost, it would be great if it would benifit the birds in some way.
Let me know your thoughts.
