Anyone waiting on chicks???

So what does everyone else do with those other chicks? Cull? Raise them for a while and try to give them to a good home? How do tell the difference between them and the ones you originally wanted?

I have always gone down to the feed store and gotten my chicks...this time is my first time ordering through the mail and it's just gut-wrenching (like waiting for that school acceptance letter or something!). Meyer confirmed that they were sent on Monday, but Tuesday has gone by.......tomorrow????

I would love to try and hatch my own one day, but I need more experience first.

I have heard of the male packing peanuts, and I have seen some beautiful ones! I doubt they will put any in with mine, as they had a minimum order anyway.....I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with 30 chicks! Hahaha!

Did you get your babies, Shuizar?

I stopped by the post office today to warn them that I shoudl be getting my babies in Thursday. They laughed and said they would call me first thing. She said they would probably be there waiting on them that morning......they don't open till 9, but will call me at 7:30 or 8 depending on the shipment. It's a small town post office, so that helps!

My brooder is all set up and ready to go. Draft and cat proofed! I just need to go get a thermometer......can't find mine, and disinfect the waterers. I used a baby playpen that my friend had for her dog when she had puppies.....it's big enough I hope! (At least at first!)

Come on Thursday!!!

tuper: I am intrigued by your pig! My middle daughter has begged for one but I just don't think we are in the right location, nor does my DH indulge past the hickens. One dog. That's it. I would love another! Post some picks of your pig (with hens?)

Don't have a pig and chick pic, but do have pig and cat pic!

He is the CUTEST thing, but to be honest I don't think we will try a pig again once this one goes. Everyone I've talked to who owned one said thiers was the sweetest thing ever, but this little guy never did warm up to us. He wants NOTHING to do with people. He lived in the house for 3 months and we never could pet him unless he was snatching a treat out of our hands. He's outside now with the goats and seems really happy. BOLTS at the sight of us now. (Even though in the kitchen he would at least wlk around our legs as long as we didn't stoop to pet him.) I just wish he had been as sweet as everyone said he would be because I was so looking forward to kissing his wittle nose.

I have some rubberhairbands that are really small. I use them for my daughters hair. They fit perfectly around an ankle. Get clear though or you could have some problems.

UPDATE on my chickies. They are late.

I paid for express next day. Supposed to be here by today at 3. At least I get my shipping back!!! And would you believe that I told the breeder to credit me on a purchase for Lavender orp eggs. And she is MAHAHAHAHAHA.

I was fully aware that males would be added for warmth... But I was quite surprised when I opened the box to see so many extras (12). Looks like I will be posting a craigslist ad here soon...

When I called Ideal, they informed me that if I ordered under 17 or 18 chicks, they will put packing peanuts aka male chicks for added warmth. I am surprised that you did not know.

Ill bet the roos are thankful to not be thrown in the trash. Craigslist is a good a option. Have fun with your fuzzy butts.

My three came today with no packing peanuts--from Meyer. All safe and sound and chirping away. Happy to be warm and with water and food....they are adorable. The cutest they will ever be

I didn't get any babies this morning.

I called and they said I should get them first thing tomorrow morning. Wahhhhh, I have to wait another day! But I guess it's a good thing because I couldn't seem to get my brooder temp just right with the light. I added a ceramic heater and will see what happens. My luck, it will probably get too hot, haha!

They are sooooooo tiny! None were DOA, hopefully they will all make it past this stressful stage....two days in a box would have me wishing I wasn't alive myself!

I'm trying to figure out what colors I got. Looks like I got some white, blue, black, and buff (?). That's about the best I can tell! Hahaha!

I'm assuming they are 2-3 days old now since they shipped on Wednesday.

I'm in love!!!!!!
