Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

Thanks Cluck! This is my first ever hatch, as we just got our chickens over the summer. I have a pair of Japanese Bantams that I plan to hatch as soon as they are older- both white tailed black. Good luck with your hatch as well! I am anxiously awaiting mine, I think I have candled practically everyday! HAHA
No problem.
Wicked, do you have any pictures of your Jap banties. They are so funny to see.

Nice!!!
I found a fish tank in my garage yesterday and am thinking of getting some fish now.lol....

And here is a picture of my very ghetto DIY aquarium 'bator. All items used to create this were on hand, minus the the thermometer. I was able to find another piece of odd sized styrofoam to put on the other end of the the tank. Whenever I'm not looking at it, I have all four sides covered with styrofoam, exccept the front I leave a little open because it gets pretty hot in there with it closed all the way. And usually, I don't have a blanket on the top, but at this point, I was trying to raise the heat in the tank since I swapped tanks after the first one fell on the floor (which is surprisingly not broken from the fall).

That is an amazing incubator!!!
How many eggs can you get in there???

I've read somewhere that you can use clear nail polish to seal cracked eggs. Its supposed to help keep the germs out.
Yes, this is true. If you end up with a shipped egg that has a hairline crack filling it with nail polish helps stop germs and moisture escaping.

I've never done it myself, but I think the chances of bacteria getting in are way more harmful. The amount of chemical getting through is minimal, but even a sliver of a crack might as well be an open doorway for infection. And if one egg becomes infected there is greater risk of it spreading to other eggs. If you're really concerned about it, try to find a natural wax. My local craft store sells bees wax for making candles.

I was able to fit 12 in the incubator, there was more room in there for more, but I only wanted to try 12. It seems like it's cooler temperatures behind the lamp than it is in front of it, which makes sense. I'm sure I could fit a lot more in there if I didn't put washcloths down too, but for some reason, I feel like they need something soft to rest on.

You prove a very valid point. I'll have to check into doing something about it.. I wouldn't want there to be any infection. Thank you!

Hi Cluck,

I have a few pictures of my japs, they arent the best as when we got them the bigger birds were picking on them so they stayed in a smaller wire cage until they were integrated. Now they are bigger and don't get picked on, but they are so fast and elusive so pictures are hard.

They are a great breed and I think I am going to enjoy them as they get older.

The silver/white bird under the bucket is actually my silkie/jap cross. When I bought her they told me she was a pure jap and after seeing a second posting from the same people I am convinced it was miscommunication (I have gotten majority of my birds from them and they had several people picking up that day). I actually bought the 2 pure WTB japs from them as well.

Do you have anything separating the lamp from the chicks?

Yeah there seemed like a heap of room and if you manage to get the light back a bit even more room.

Wow, they are tiny. So much smaller than I had first anticipated!

I am -dying- to fire up my incubator!!!! Shoot me for looking at classifieds selling hatching eggs! I'm thinking about adding some variety to my flock. But it's too cold. The broody hen was a fluke, I really hope it warms up by the time they hatch. Or they will be in my house for weeks until it does.

There is a park near me with a small flock of ,very friendly, pekin ducks. Last year I found a nest of eggs and was so excited to see the parents with little babies! But the next time I went there, can you believe, some @sshole threw rocks in there and crushed all the eggs!! I was so upset.

So, I'm sort of hoping I stumble across another nest. I will take some home this time. It will be fun to hatch ducks and have little ducklings to play with! Anyone know when I should start looking for them? lol
