I set some B/B/S Silkie eggs on Jan 11th, which means they should hatch sometime around Feb 1st.

I started with 12, candled on day 5 and chucked 4 clears. The other 8 are going strong. This is my first hatch from my new black rooster, so I'm hoping the chicks are going to be nice :fl
Good luck everyone!

I'll join! I'll join!

I just set my first batch ever on Thursday, the 17th. I set 9 eggs. They were shipped to me. A barnyard mix, so I'll have the adventure of trying to figure out what they are. I put in 3 brown, 3 white and one teeny tiny little cream colored egg. Anything goes.

I have the Brinsea mini eco.

Candled today for the first time. Not too sure what I'm looking at, but according to what I see on BYC, we're looking alright for most of them.

Can anyone who has done this before answer a question? Is it alright if the yolk/blob floats around when I turn the egg?

YAY YAY

Welcome!

I was a bit like that with my first hatch, just put everything in. I even had quail eggs in.lol.

Is it alright if the yolk/blob floats around when I turn the egg? NO! If you turn it on it's side and it's like a spirit level bubble then no. That is called a detached air sack.
With shipped eggs you are supposed to get them and store them in a cool place to rest for 24 - 48 hours you then warm them up, then place them in the bator.
With shipped eggs that have detached air sacks you do the above step but then have to let them sit ( no turning ) in the bator for another 1-2 days ( bator on ). You then start turning and don't candle till day 15. Also some people like to let them hatch standing up.

But seeing as you are on day 4 - 5 it's to late. If I was you I would just leave them all now. Let them sit ( no candling ) till day 16 or even better just leave them till they hatch.

Good luck Sepaditty, keep us posted.

I think that's probably what I'll do. Since I dropped one while candling, it sort of lost its allure.

I wish I had known all that about shipped eggs before. But, it is what it is. We'll see.

B/B/S= Blue/Black/Splash.

I've got 2 splash Silkie hens, 1 blue Silkie hen and a black Sizzle (but I don't think any of her eggs made it in, she just started laying sometime recently). My rooster is black so the chicks should be blue and black, unless someone's hiding something...which I hope not.
I didn't take any candling pictures. I candled them all in the carton, so I didn't even touch them.
This hatch, I'm trying not to touch them at all. Or at least as little as possible. Instead of turning each egg, I'm propping up one side of the bator with a book then moving it to the other (if that makes sense). I also turn the egg carton once a day so the eggs sit in different places in the incubator since mine is still air. We'll see if it makes any difference

Ahh ok. Got it.

Oh I hope you do get a sizzle.lol. They are to cool!
Do you breed silkies or are these just to add to your flock?

My bator is all auto so I don't need to turn my eggs manually but yes I get what your saying.

Is it the yolk or air sac moving? The air cell is just that, a bubble of air. It should be on the fat end of the egg, but like said can detatch during shipping and float around the shell. The yolk should be inside the eggs contents and can look like a shadow or yellow blob depending on how well you can see inside. It should move, sort of bob, when you turn the egg. That is normal.
If its the air sac, cluckcluckluke is spot on. They'll need to have time to reattatch, if the will. If they don't, just keep them upright in paper egg cartons.
Ggood luck
