Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

I candled mine, they are on day 5ish, saw clear veining on 3, but I'm not sure about the other 3. They have thick shells. I left them all, I'll wait another week before tossing any.

Wow! Candled just now the first set of 9 (day 10). For you veterans you've seen it. For us newbies- movement. I didn't really no what to look for until I watched the vid on this link. My torch is just a simple led flashlight that was packed with my incubator. I don't think it's as bright as good one??? so with the light brown eggs I can't see veining. I was finally patient enough to hold still and watch and the shadow would get light, then dark then light...

If one of the verterans would confirm my observation I would appreciate it greatly.

I just watched that video again. I just don't have that type of clearity, but it's a white egg in the video and I'm sure that makes a difference. I was able to see the best when I held the egg on it's side. The bottom of the egg is a lot lighter on mine than in the vid. but I suppose that is because that egg is upside down (right? the pics i have seen look the egg has been inverted so the air sack is down) not letting as much light through. Maybe I'll tr taking a pic.

I will be amazed if you can see into the Marans eggs! My regular bantams (not bantam large fowl) have all hatched at 19 days even when they are in with LF eggs. The LF eggs in the incubator still hatch at 21 days. The bantams I have are d'Uccles , Sebrights and Silkies. I am adding Pekins and of course the Faverolles. I have also been considering Oldansk to add later this summer, but I need to find more info on those first.

Quote: Cool! Why do you need so many aquariums?!?!!?
Sounds wonderful.
I think every newbie is obsessed with their bators first time.lol. I went out and splurged on a full auto bator, brand new so I was much less worried, especially because I couldn't really do or change anything.lol.
Yes, I have heard Styrofoam to be great with helping in incubation, especially in dry hatches.

I will although 5 of my eggs went in on the 6th. Will have to check to see when I put in the rest of them. 3 small batches all together.

How many eggs set: 1. 5 eggs, 2. 8 eggs?, 3. 6 eggs? The incubator is in our guest bathroom so will check soon and edit this post.
Date they where set and when they will hatch: 1. set the 6th and due to hatch probably on the 25th at 19 days but they may run a bit longer. I have never set bantamized LF. My bantams usually go 19 days. 2. 3. I set these on the 20th and the hatch date is Feb 8th.
Breeds set: ( be it mixed or pure ) bantam blue Faverolles, LF blue Faverolles, d'Uccles
Posted, Pick up or own eggs: The 1st 2 sets were shipped, the 3rd set were my own.
Bator(s) used or Broody Hen: Incubator
Extras: Include and extra's like are the show quality, how many detached air sacks if posted etc.

1. 3 of the eggs are growing. I opened 2 of them 4 days after setting and there was no growth so I tossed them. Pretty much scrambled.
2. The eggs being a bit darker...I can't tell from candling. When it gets down to candling, I am just not good with eggs that don't have white or lightly colored shells. Maybe later.
3. I can't tell on these due to time. I don't expect many if any will hatch. I have 1 hen old enough to lay and I didn't know she was laying this year yet.. They have a small coop and pen. I don't close them up in the coop and had not checked. They were a surprise! So, I know it has been freezing at night and quite cold during the day...don't know how many were killed before they started but 1 was still warm when I took them. I checked yesterday and there were no eggs.

If anyone else has raised bantamized LF, how long did it take for the eggs to hatch?

Wow, Blue Favs sounds amazing!!! Do you have any pictures??
I have just recently hatched out a bantam frizzle x LF White Leghorn and she did seem to hatch out a day later than the rest, but that could have been for any reason, not that she was a bantam x LF.
Good luck with your hatch

. Keep us updated.

It's going to be interesting to candle my maran eggs. They are so dark !
Mine are not as dark as yours Sam and I cant see anything AT ALL!!
So unless you have a torch bright enough ( bright enough to make them burst into flames.lol. ) your not going to see much.lol.

So after my last post I had looked at the pics again and looked at one or two eggs again and began to worry in stead of being excited. Since we're on day 10, I had a freind stop by after work who has chickens to take a look and now we're looking at nine duds. I guess I was just seing the yolk move around. Course he's like give'm a couple more days. I recall seing somewhere "eggtopsy" Should I try cracken one and see what I find? My guess is where it was between **** cold and sub zero the before and a little during the first collection week, fertility may have suffered. I'm not worried about the eggs freezing, but my young roo, who may still be too young, studs may be duds. or otherwise missing the mark. Friend suggested trimming the vents. The weather had mellowed out. but this week we did have two nights down to zero F.

I have a horrible disorder called MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome). I keep freshwater fish. When I found a good deal on Craigslist, I had to snatch all of them!

If you are pretty sure that it's a dud, you could crack one open and seeing what's inside. Put it inside a zip-lock before you crack it so that you don't have to smell the stink, if that's what it turns out to be. Have you been eating the eggs that your hens lay that could be fertilized by the roo? Did you check to see if you could see the bulls eye on the yolk? I hope that they are just shy, but it sounds like they are probably duds :(

today is day 7. Candled a couple again just to see, even though I don't really know what I'm looking for. Only 1 looks exactly like the pictures. All but 1 of the others are a mystery. We'll see what happens.

Quote: I personally would leave them till day 12 or so till I cracked one open. But you can just try.
Also crack one of your eating eggs open and see if their is a bull eye.
I think you only have to trim the vent for Pekins or other fluffy butts!
Good luck, I hope you wrong.lol. and you get some chicks.
