Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

I took some pictures of my breeding flock and thought I'd share them since I didn't share any egg or candling pics

Blue hen, Wendy.

Black rooster, Early.

One of my splash hens, Ellie Mae. The other splash and my Sizzle were too busy crawling under me to be bothered with pictures

I'm on another hatch-along, but I would like to join in this one too, because there is someone else here that set theirs on the 12th, like I did.

Tell us:
How many eggs set: Initially 10, but then I added 3 more in a couple of days later.
Date they where set and when they will hatch: #1-10 were set on 1/12; #11-13 were set on 1/14. They will hatch on 2/3 and 2/5, respectively.
Breeds set: ( be it mixed or pure ) backyard mutts. One hen is a BSL and the other hen is a silver laced wyandotte. The roo is a feather footed mutt.
Posted, Pick up or own eggs: My own. I have had my chickens for about 3 years, and none of them would stay broody enough to raise their own clutch, so I am intervening.
Bator(s) used or Broody Hen: DIY 10 gallong aquarium incubator. I had all supplies needed for this simple setup, so I wasn't willing to spend money on a brand new incubator when I had stuff to make my own.

Extras: Include and extra's like are the show quality, how many detached air sacks if posted etc. This is my first time incubating eggs. Ever. I'm pretty excited! The first few days were very troublesome/worrisome because I realized that none of my thermometers were correct.

I had a couple of horrible temperature swings, according to the thermometers. On day 3, I bought a more reliable thermometer and have been doing great since. Thankfully, the old therms were reading high, which means, they weren't nearly as hot as I thought they were. Phew! What a relief!
Now, of course I set the eggs before I did very much research, so I didn't have the right understanding about humidity, didn't know about measuring the air sac, or to avoid using porous eggs. Thankfully, I only have a couple of porous eggs. Humidity isn't high, only 30% (does this sound about right?). I suppose measuring air sacs is better late than never?
I am on day 9 now, and so far all looks well. Yesterday, I candled and found that #5 was still clear- no development or anything. #6 had development a couple of days ago, but when I candled it had a blood ring only, so I chucked it and #5 out. I think so far, I'm fairing pretty well! Oh yeah, and #9, I accidentally broke. I was upset but was also happy to see that it was developing, even after my thermometer crisis. So right now I have 10 eggs out of 13.

Hi aacre, fun to do this with some newbies like myself and some more experienced people. Being relativily new to chickens, I see how howfunkyisurchicken chose their avatar! Those are funcky chickens.

I had a cow "go broody" Friday. She wanted to claim every calf in site. finaly calved Tues and she calmed down.

Tried to make a homemade candler with a brighter light tonight. Day 9 1/2 and still couldn't realy define anything yet. but still learning. I just tried one or two. Just a nice shadow.

Do you have any pictures of your DIY bator, that is such a good idea using an aquarium. Have you used Styrofoam? It works real well at keeping the warmth in.
Good luck with your hatch, I think many beginners have had many troubles. It's all part of the fun really and next time you can improve and improve.

I just get a toilet roll holder ( the cardboard roll at the end ) and it goes nicely over one of my torch. Makes a wonderful candler. I will get a picture soon.
