Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

Tell us:
How many eggs set: 24
Date they where set and when they will hatch: 1/19 hatch 2/9
Breeds set: ( be it mixed or pure ) barn yard all mixed. The roo is an Easter Egger and the hens are all different types.
Posted, Pick up or own eggs: pick up
Bator(s) used or Broody Hen: Hovabator Genesis 1588, egg turner
Extras: Include and extra's like are the show quality, how many detached air sacks if posted etc.

I also added some of our own eggs on later days and plan to add some more this Sunday. All the ones I am adding will most likely be Jersey Giant roo and Buff Orpington, mix Buff Orpington, or Australop hen. I also hope to get 6-10 Dark Maran eggs locally this Sat. We have two incubators. The second one, Still air old hovabator we plan to use for lock down the last 3 days or so. Not sure if it was wise to put them all in at different days. I think DH candled them but all seemed good. we plan to candle 2 more times.

I want to eventually get one or two types of other chickens each with their own roo to get pure breed. Maybe the Dark Maran might be one of them and I am interested in Barred Rock.

Your going to get a lovely abundance of colours!!!
Marans are great. I used to have a blue, clay and 2 French Wheatens. Now I only have the 2 French Wheatens.
Never heard of dark Marans, you sure that's a colour? I used to really be into them and never heard of Darks!!

I have no idea. LOL I think they are Copper Marans? But I know the lady has more types of Marans. I'll take whatever she has. They have feathers on the legs. I am just glad to hatch some eggs that will be pure. I heard the Maran eggs and even the chicken itself are good to eat.The barn yard eggs will be great for the kids. My friend has Polish chickens, Turkens and other types of interesting chickens but she has one roo EE so the chicks will be all mixed. Only one of the 24 eggs was blue green and lots where a nice brown. I am hoping they will lay a rainbow of colors but maybe I will need more green/blue layers if I look at the eggs I am hatching. We are candling Saturday.

Yes Copper Marans are a colour. You can get Blue Coppers as well, they are wonderful!
I do believe Copper are clean skanked so if her's are feathered then they are French Wheatens.
Yes Marans are dual.
Yeah some EE's only lay brown eggs. Not sure how the offspring will come out in the laying department.
Good luck

Bator(s) used or Broody Hen:Home made Coolerbator.
Extras: Include and extra's like are the show quality, how many detached air sacks if posted etc. The BLRW's, GLW's and the Araucana are show quality and I might separate them at a later date but this is our first attempt at hatching chicks so we just got what we could. Just to try. If I decide to get serious then I will invest in a good incubator but for now this is just for fun.(Kind of exciting too!!!!)

Here is a pic. Lid was off so temp and humidity are not right.

Welcome Xovan!
I bet those will be lovely mixes! I'm imagining a BLRW with a beard and muffs that lays a blue or green egg!

Arrrg, 9 days left everyone. Whenever I get close to the last week, the days seem to drag by. This is when I wish I had a turner so I could just forget them until I hear chicks peeping :barnie

How many eggs set: Initially 5, but added 11 more over 2 days
Date they where set and when they will hatch: #1-5 were set on 1/15; #6-11 were set on 1/16. #12-16 were set on 1/17. They will hatch on 2/5, 2/6 and 2/7, respectively.
Breeds set: ( be it mixed or pure ) backyard mutts. Hen choices: Red Sex Links, RIR, Silkie (Blue and Black) Black Jersey Giant, Black Orpington, White Rock, Japxsilkie, - I think that is all of the hens! I have diverse flock! Roos: RIR, Aracauna-feather footed and Black Silkie.
Posted, Pick up or own eggs: My own- This is my first time EVER incubating/hatching!

Bator(s) used or Broody Hen: Little Giant Still Air Incubator
Extras: Include and extra's like are the show quality, how many detached air sacks if posted etc. Can't good Candling pics, but I think that I have 3 Blood Rings and 2 possibly clear. This is my first time, and I have never candled before. I have marked those 5 to see how they develop. If no change by day 18,I will probably take them out.

Will try to post more pictures at another time! Trying to catch them all standing still.

Thank you for the welcome. It is funy that you mentioned that because I was going to start a project this year to get a BLWR NN with tufts,no tail and no rump, that lays blue/green eggs. here is a pic of our Araucana.

Oh and 9 days left? I should be sleeping while kids are in school but I have been checking the incubator every 5 minutes and we set yesterday.

I'm completely devastated right now. I decided to clean my bathroom and do my weekly mopping in there, and that's where my incubator is at since it's the only room that maintains a nice stable temperature. Well, I went to move the table to clean behind it, and one of the legs gave way. Luckily I was right there and able to "help" it to the floor. It didn't shatter the tank but about half of my babies cracked open.

The other 5 are crack free, but that doesn't mean the tumble didn't kill them, unless day 10 is far enough along that it wouldn't. They technically only rolled with the lean and the other 5 bore the brunt of it. I guess I'll find out tonight if they are OK. I knew there was something sketchy about that table I was using! It's things like this that make me want to give up, except for the hope that the other 5 are OK.. Not a good day and it's barely 9am.
