Anyone want to hatch with. Today is the big day!!!!!!!!!! (thursday)

I just hold the flashlight tightly and put the egg over it... I read LED is better because it doesn't emit heat through the egg... so maybe a cardboard cutout to put inbetween the egg and torch?

My instruction booklet actually didn't say when, or to keep the tray filled or not.. it just said the more water you add the higher the humidity (duh).. so it wasn't very helpful.. I read it over and over.. grrr!! Thank you for your advice though!

Hi this is my first try at hatching some chicken eggs. I have 13 eggs in a homemade incubator I made from info on internet. The eggs came in on April1st so I hope some will hatch 4/22-day before my birthday! they are bronw eggs so have not tried candeling as yet but that would be something new to do,too! It will be fun to leteach other know how things are progressing. thanks to all.

I'm not candling until at least Monday, maybe not until Wednesday. I'm having issues with a stable temperature, so I don't want to have any of the eggs out any longer than I have to. We will be doing a lovely graphing exercise with my students to see how many eggs we can see growth versus how many are clear. I have to have some assurance that I've waited long enough. Silly kids would be too crazy if none of the eggs had anything to see.

Hope it's not too late to join in. I ordered my first Silkie eggs. I have 30 eggs that went into the bator this morning. Not my first eggs though, I hatched 20 chicks a couple weeks ago (Splash Marans, Golden Cuckoo Marans and Dark Brahma). Also hatched chicks and guinea keets last spring. I've always added water from day 1. With shipped eggs, I have gotten over 50% hatch rate. I try to keep the humidity at 60-65% though it's only at about 55% now.

I have more Silkie and Sizzle eggs coming next week and they'll go in another bator. I just picked up 2 extra Little Giant styro bators second hand. I have 2 egg turners and splurged this year on a fan for one of the bators.

Careful, I'm pretty sure that hatching your own is quite addictive!

Just a note on shipped eggs. My husband and I are postal contractors. We work closely with our local main processing facility. The gal that works express mail explained that normally, if marked correctly, live hatching eggs are treated just like the other live animals that go through the USPS. They are basically treated as "express mail" even if sent "priority". It is important that "LIVE HATCHING EGGS" is clearly marked on the box. Of course, that doesn't speak for the USPS nationwide. I recently received eggs with bad air cells. I don't know if it was due to old eggs or mishandling. Of the 8 eggs paid for, I have 3 live chicks.

This will be my first bantams hatched and my first Silkies! I'm very excited.
