Please let me thank our members for sharing their vast amount of knowledge and teachings, as this city girl wouldn't know what to do without our community! I have spent days reading threads, to absorb anything and everything I can, to teach my young farmers, which I am eternally grateful to have as a resource!

Let the games begin😂

I have mystery ducklings that I was fairly certain of the breed, however the past 13 days my certainty has changed my mind😭😭

All ducklings were purchased at rural king. The 4 (Rouen?) the milk chocolate (with the black spots on his back and walks like a Campbell) and the big yellow one (which looks to have a brown or black undercoat coming in) were purchased 10/23. Today I was convinced to bring home another 4 mysterious ducklings; I have 1 black duckling, 2 1000% yellow ducks (with a little fuz ball on top of their head). The final, tiniest duck is identical to the other 2 1000% yellow ducks, with one exception, it has one large black spot on the back of its neck🧐😳

ETA: I need to apologize in advance if there are typos or Grammer issues; seriously 48 hours without sleep is no joke. I truly believe my brain is mush at this point🙈

Black one looks like a runner, otherwise it is a Cayuga.

The one with the bluish gray beak and yellow and brown is a Welsh harlequin

Brown one also looks like a chocolate runner, but may be a khaki Campbell.

Not sure about the one with one white spot. I would say ancona, but no idea otherwise. It also looks like it may be a crested duck.

Agree with the 4 Rouens.

The yellows ones I want to say Pekin, but they are either a lot younger or something else like a white layer.

They are all adorable!

would assume there is at least 7-10 days difference in age between the larger ducklings and the smaller ones. I base this guess on the fact that when I purchased the 4 Rouen, and the 2 following ducks those were the only breeds rural king had on display.

In regards to the duck below, pictures 1 & 2 are the same duckling. I originally purchased it thinking it was a Campbell. I came to this conclusion because it was the medium brown color, walked more upright like a penguin and had black beak/legs. This duck has kept its posture; however I have never seen a Campbell baby fuz fade in color or have black spots develop.

As you can see in pictures 3, 4, 5 and 6, the yellowish duckling has a light brown, striped face. When I first purchased it, i thought the "Campbell?" Duckling and it were siblings; mostly due to the fact they were similar in age, build and size and in the same pen; however this ducks fuz was yellow (like a pekin with a light brown horizontal stripe on both side of it's face and this one does NOT walk like a penguin. In the 2 weeks I have had it, this yellow fuz has started turning dark at the roots, which is why I'm lost; I thought all yellow ducklings turned white?

If it walks upright then it is a runner. They look very similar as ducklings. Mine didn't walk upright right away.

So the yellow one darkening really does look like a Welsh, especially with that beak and they can have a range in coloration. But buff ducklings also start out yellow looking and turn brown. Saxony look pretty yellow at first too, and their stripes can be very faint.

On to the smaller ducks that I purchased today as shown in pictures 1, 2 and 3. I purchased the 3 yellow ones because I thought they were crested, this was due to the fact they possessed additional fuz, that was shaped like a woman's bun, on top of their head. It wasn't until I got home and was letting them run around a little bit that I noticed 1 out if the 3 "crested?" Ducklings had a black dot on the back of his neck. Since they all 3 look identical with the exception of the smallest who had a black spot on it's neck (pictures 4, 5 and 6), it made me wonder if I was wrong; especially considering every crested I have seen was always all white.

The black duck (pictures 7,8 and 9).was also bought today although I really didn't have a clue as to his breed, he was just to cute to leave behind

It does look like a crested with a rather small crest. Usually crested are sold as Pekin, but any breed can be crested. From what I understand the crested gene is heterozygous, so you not all the offspring will have the crest. What that black dot means... :idunno.

The little black guy also looks like another runner, but a black runner. Only other option is aEven with a good calcium source things happen sometimes. Cayuga, but the duck doesn't look like it has their form. If it is standing up right too, it is a runner.

UPDATE:

As for mystery duck, I believe it may be a Silver Appleyard but am still waiting for more feathers to confirm

In the past few weeks, I've been rather busy and my addiction has grown! We currently are standing at 28 ducks, in 10 weeks; Yes, you reas that right, 10 weeks! We also have grown our flock, we are now over 60 chicks. I say 60 because that's where I lost count 2 weeks ago😂😂😂

Sadly over the past week we have had 10 fatalities (7 guineas & 3 chicks)😭😭 in searching was due to the feed store, who sold me feed designed for poultry 8+ weeks as chick starter! I did question why my bag didn't say chick starter but was told it was a cheaper but equivalent version. I have now learned to trust my gut, further research anything I'm unsure of, and NEVER TRUST the so called experts! This was a tough/painful lesson to learn as a first time feather mom!

please excuse the mess we are currently cleaning pens

They are precious. :love Congrats on growing your flock. It is very addicting.
And very sorry for your losses too. Many of us have learned not to listen to the hired help at feed stroes.

Sad part is the owners, their adult children and grandchildren are who run the office, which has been in their family for over 100 years!
