I might be getting 3 Serama hens tomorrow and just wondering if anyone who has them could tell me about their experience with them? How many eggs? What size eggs do you get? I know they normally produce small eggs but just curious on how small they really are. Friendly behavior? They’ll be around kids so I wanted to be sure we wouldn’t have any mishaps. How do they act around other animals? I have a cat and a neighboring dog.

That is a serama in my Avatar. Had 2 a few years ago. One died to an illness, and other one disappeared when some unruly children were playing and chasing my chickens.

Eggs are small, and not too many. Eggs were smaller than my OEGH banties lay. Just slightly larger than those of my pigeons.
Mine were friendly and feisty enough to maintain a good enough status/relations in my mixed flock of big, medium, and small chickens. Pets only BTW.
You have to make sure that your cat and neighbors dog, are accepting of chickens. My multiple outdoor cats (avatar shows them) and my killer dogs, do not bother any of my chickens. Cats are naughty towards pigeons though.

I did have a bad incident with a neighbors dog. One of my LF EE, flew over run area fence, 6 foot, and fell victim in my unprotected back yard.

WISHING YOU BEST......and :welcome

This was my flock then. Most are in pix.
This is today.
I only keep them as pets. Give them treats and scratch. I also do give all types of kitchen scraps to them. (nothing spoiled BTW, just cuttings from veggies and such, :)) Now in winter, I will boil up a portion of Ramen Noodles (without the flavor packet) and serve it warm. Its a feeding frenzy comparing it to Sharks with blood in water.:gig I crush the noodles dry before cooking so chickens are not dealing with 16 inch long strands. It is a really good treat at .20 cent cost.:)
Even though I don't seem to be feeding my chickens by the BOOK. (I call it science diet) and many here may criticize me for not giving enough of this and too much of that, my chickens LIVE LONG LIVES. Oldest went 13 years. I must be doing something correctly. I may not win egg laying contests, but that is not my goal. When my chickens do go on an egg laying streak, there are more than we can eat. I give away to my neighbors. (only those that are not afraid of non store eggs)
50 pounds of Alfock seem to last me about 2 months. I also do see squirrels helping themselves to the feed in the run as well. I don't mind feeding those lil cuties as well. I have a soft heart for all living things. :love
My squirrels trust me.

Your 50 pounds of feed will last your duration depending on how many mouths you feed. Main thing is to keep dry. It will not deteriorate and expire for a good long time. (meaning, it is still eatable even though the nutritional values may have decreased a little, as does with all things)
Bottom line;; Don't stock up for the next 5 years.:gig

Wow that’s amazing! I’m getting 4 seramas. Did/do you have a serama rooster? If so was it loud?

I have five seramas right now (going to breed). 3 pullets, 2 cockerels. The pullets have just started laying and their eggs are pretty small. Smaller than a quarter to a little larger than a quarter. The roos crow loud-ish. Not too loud though.

(I gtg will post ahain tomorrow)

I live in a rooster free zone. There are some peeps in area that do keep them. I can hear them. I do not want to take a chance with Sheriffs with their SWAT TEAMS, knocking on my door telling me I cant keep chickens any longer. Chickens (hens) are allowed, but roosters are a no no. One complaint from anyone and its ALL OVER.
When I'm sitting on my patio enjoying a refreshing iced tea, and watching my flock grazing in front of me those same Sheriffs, as they pass, give me a THUMBS UP.:thumbsup

I’m getting a serama rooster along with my 3 little ladies but I’m hoping his crow will be quiet enough not to disturb! The 3 are my hens I’m getting and the single is the rooster!

Thinking about having people preorder and sell serama fertilized eggs/possibly hatchlings! Can’t find a price though on what they go for, any ideas anyone?
