Anyone with gastro problems?

Wifezilla - you are my soul sister! So many of your posts say exactly what is on my mind and what I would write if I had more time!

I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance and malabsorption about 4 years ago. I do not have a celiac diagnosis because I elected not to have an endoscopy... I figured that if gluten was causing an immune response in my body I should just stop eating it and skip the invasive procedure! I had experimented with "elimination" diets to try to figure out my food allergies with no success. It was not until I eliminated gluten for several months that I saw results. Of course, during the transition to a gluten-free diet I made mistakes so that my have slowed the recovery somewhat.

Maybe it is time to find a new doctor! I have pretty much given up on doctors for this kind of stuff since the three times that I have looked to western medicine for help in the last 20 years it has failed me and I have had to do my own research and take my health into my own hands.

birdnutz, we are the same age. My entire family history is parade of sugar/insulin issues. Diabetes, heart disease, gout, etc....

I was actually dx'd with a wheat intolerance at 19. I was just told to cut back. I had no idea all my weight issues, high blood pressure, etc... were all related. I am on year 3 of a carbohydrate restricted diet. Amazing how many issues just went away once I got my blood sugar under control.

If you do decide to get tested for the gluten intolerance, wheat allergies, etc... DO NOT CUT OUT WHEAT BEFORE THE TEST. The gluten allergy test can give you bad results if you stop before the testing.

Hi Amy!!!

One of the women in my belly dance class just ditched gluten. She is in her mid 30's and has had all kinds of GI problems. She is feeling so much better after 3 weeks without gluten.

I never thought I would find anyone that had the same symptoms! I have had chronic nausea for the last 14 years (after my first child was born) They say I have IBS and they have no idea what causes the nausea. I have severe bowel cramps.

They put me on Prozac for my IBS??? But, that made it much worse. So, I just deal with all the bloating, gas, nausea, etc. etc. If you find something that works, please do let me know.

Wifezilla are you currently on the palio diet? I found the web site with recipes. In some ways it'll be easy but at the same time it goes against everything you're taught and told. figured it wouldn't hurt for me to try anyway.
Cammy, I had spastic colon a long time ago 18+ years. They put me on a drug (cant remember name) since been pulled by FDA. Of course it worked like a charm. It was causing impaction on some people because theirsymptoms were constipation. It was meant for diarrhea. But they gave me nitro glycerin pills for under my tongue for the spasms. It helped relieve the cramping, which was what caused the extreme nausea for me.

Well I commisserate with you as these used to be my symptoms. But dietary was the majority of my problem....Now that I have goat milk and make kefir (really big help it is!!!) and yogurt, my digestive have settled down. So, if you have a friend with a goat or can find one, try some raw milk.....I know that may sound strange but it has made all the difference for me....

Kefir is the best help followed by Yogurt......When I eat out and there are products I know I'm allergic to that will be in it, like during the holidays at other folks houses, I drink kefir before and also after and I dont suffer for hours like I used to...

It's amazing what these can do.

"This is no way substitutes for the advice of your doctor"....just my experiences

Hope you are feeling better soon and have a blessed evening. (I'll be praying for better health for you!)

No, I just limit my carbs to 60g or less of carbs per day. I eat too much dairy to be paleo

but I do think it is a very healthy, healing way to eat.

I bet they put you on Prozac because they thought your nausea was like my doctor thought, it was stress anxiety that was causing most of it and a antidepressant helps with anxiety. Part of my problem really is stress and anxiety, it does make me physically sick to my stomach and having Diarrhea, because it has helped, but not entirely. They did try me on two different antidepressants. I took each one, only one dose each both with severe side effects that made me say NO MORE!
I had terrible gas and movements (feels like food is working through your intestines (gurgling)). Its kind of a warning to be by a bathrooom in the next 15 minutes. I was in the bathroom 3 times this am and finally took antidiarrheal pills. I take the antidiarrheal pills whenever I have plans I need to go to, just in case. I suffered from Constipation (partly self induced) as a child until around 18 years old that I figure all those years I screwed up my system enough now it has problems.

Incidently, the ginger tea and candies do help nausea, and I also purchased sea bands that I wear in the AM if I wake up feeling ill. They all help most of the time so you should maybe try some of those ideas. For months I would wake up fine and then feel ill until about noonish. Now, I wake up ill and getting up and going outside for air seems to help a bit. Course, getting nauseated 12-14 days into my "cycle" (ovulating) and just before my period is completely different, hopefully the Birth Control pills will ease that now. I only have one ovary, the other was removed a month after the gall bladder surgery.
Overall, I do think I have managed to get a bit better as I learn. I have thought about wheat, but that would be extremely difficult to remove from my diet.

Anyone want to add some insight on what things I could eat for 3 weeks to see if it is wheat? If I do try it, I need to put serious effort into it and do it right.

Also wonder if I should get tested for H. Pylori.

Difficult? Yes, but only at first.

In general....

Meat, eggs, fresh vegetables...both steamed with cheese and raw in salads with oil and balsamic dressing (yum!!!), some fruits...but mostly berries. Avoid anything that comes in a box. Get on a friendly basis with your bbq grill. Be VERY careful of sauces and dressings...they like to hide wheat in them.

As for specifics...
You might want to cook on the weekend and make little containers. Then it is easy to grab and cook so you aren't tempted to eat the wrong stuff. Make a big pot of chili or a beef roast in the crock pot. Bake up a turkey. Make mini-quiches in muffin tins. You can freeze those and heat them up in a few seconds. Get a steamer for your microwave if you don't already have one. Get lots of fresh veggies and steam them up. Cover them in butter or cheese sauce

. Don't be afraid of natural healthy fats...especially if you are skipping the starches. These will help you feel full AND help your body repair itself. Butter, cheese, olive oil and non-hydroginated lard are your friends.

Bacon and eggs are a great, quick wheat-free meal. Instead of a fried egg on toast have a fried egg on a burger. I do that all the time

Also, become an obsessive label reader. Some things you never think would have wheat in them actually do.
