Anyone work at home?

I work from home for an insurance company. I am a project manager with 7 employees (all in different states), who also work from home. Our company encourages telework because it is more economical for them and allows more flexibility for workers, which helps with retention. I am one of the first who went to work at home about 6-7 years ago and it has been an increasing trend ever since. Good luck to those searching. There are good companies out there looking for remote workers with the right experience.

I also work for a major insurance company, and work from home sometimes. I would like it to be full-time at home, but we'll see. I do technology research. There are more and more opportunities for telecommuting, work-at-home, or virtual office, as it is sometimes called.
 
For the past 5 years I worked at home as a medical transcriptionist. I went to a good online school, passed with honors, took a bunch of online company tests, and settled into a job. I worked steadily (and profitably) until I retired 2 months ago at age 62. It's not an easy field, but for me it was a pleasantly profitable one.

There are 2 keys to success: EXCELLENT (as in way above average) grammar skills and a good school. There are only a handful of approved schools and without a certificate from one of those schools it is hard to get hired by the national companies. To find the schools, check out www.ahdionline.org because they are the approving body for the MT schools accepted by the national companies. And there are TONS of national companies that hire grads from these schools. Just don't get scammed into signing with a school not on the AHDI list or you won't find a job afterward.

I don't work at home myself but this thread made me think of someone I know that does, and loves her job. She works out of her home in Ohio for a small Florida based travel agency. We call her on any trips we go on and have booked several cruises with her and have gotten great deals. Another perk to her job is that she gets sent on cruises so she can evaluate the ship for her customers. If I didn't already have a good job I would want hers.

Chirpy, I checked out Alpine Access, but it seems you cannot have anything other than Dial Up internet? It said no satellite broadband or wireless. Guess that leaves me out.


I also looked at the cashcrate website, but I worry that it will give me tons of junk snail mail and sign me up to receive a bunch of online spam to my e-mail.


I will probably look into the Medical Transcriptionist idea. I worked in a Nursing Home for years and also took a Pharmacist assistant course and took a course in Medication Administration for when I worked as a Assisted Living manager so medical I know pretty well.
