So now the chicks do too. Ugh!!! I'm treating the rest of my flock but not sure what to do with the chicks. They are seperate and in the house. Do I wait until they get older? I feel like a bad chick mommy. I had no idea she had lice. How do they get lice anyway? \\What am i doing wrong?

I had a broody that hid out in the tall weeds and hatched 6 chicks, I had no idea she was there, thought she was dead! I found her just a day or so before they hatched and when I touched her these awful itchy things crawled all over me. I guess because she was on the ground on a "nest" of sorts all warm and cozy

Anyway, I let her hatch the chicks out and then dusted her and her babies with DE, moved them into a dog kennel crate with shavings dusted with DE and they stayed there for about 2-3 days and the lice/mites were gone

Why did you take her babies from her?

I used DE on all of my week old chicks several months ago. After posting on here, I was warned to make sure they did not inhale too much of the DE. So I put on some gardening gloves spread it in my hands and patted them down, ever so gently. After a few days the lice was cleared up and no probs with the DE

Good luck!

I wanted to add that to "dust" chicks I put DE in a old salt shaker and used my clean hand to cover their face/head while I shook out the DE. Then I used my fingers to rub a little DE on the tops of their heads. I was scared to death to get it in their eyes! I also rubbed it on their bellies and under their wings with my fingers.
DE really dries out my hands, but with little banty chicks it was too cumbersome to have gloves on for me. I should have had some latex type gloves.

HELP!
I am worried sick. I just got chicks a week ago. One of my buff orpingtons has a pattern on her little wings that looks like mold on the feathers! Her vent looks okay, and I haven't found any creatures on her. She scratches herself more than the others, and is biting her wings that have this spotty pattern at the base. They live in a box in my bedroom, and I have no other chickens...how could she have gotten lice? I feel terrible! Any advice on what I can do to help her? I am worried sick!
