Apartment neighbor complaing about chickens

Have you tried actually talking to the neighbors and asking what the actual problem is? There may be a way to mitigate the problem easily but you'll never know if you don't ask. Communication is easier than feuding and you may even get some help if fencing turns out to be the answer.

Not to mention that stopping the car isn't always a viable action either
Just crash it then, or swerve to miss the chicken and into a pedestrian.

Why is swerving an instict? To be an instinct, it must be A) Species Specific, and B) All of that species must possess it.

Sounds like poor driving skills to me. If you cannot maintain control of your vehicle and keep it in the proper lane, you really shouldn't be driving.

Okay, fine, automatic reaction.

Lots of people want to avoid hitting the object, and so for some, it's to just be the ones to get out of the way. And if you have someone following close behind, you can't just slam on the breaks

I want to see other species driving!

But seriously, there are some roads where stomping on the brakes is especially dangerous. We live in the country and have 2 such roads nearby.
One that is extremely hilly with semi's blasting through and blind driveways.
The other, drivers treat as a major highway going 75-85 mph despite frequent side roads and a 60 mph limit, when we drive it we have to match the crazy speeders to avoid extreme aggression. I would not brake on that road but aim for the grassy median because the trucks would pancake us.
If you have situational awareness, and moderate skill at the wheel, swerving is not such a bad thing. But since most drivers fail on staying aware of what's around them, driving schools rely on simplified blanket rules.

My driving instructor told us to hit the deer rather than lose control of the car. Or rabbit or squirrel or ...

Slow down as you safely can. Steer around it if you safely can. Don't stomp on the breaks or swerve. Among other reasons, you don't know that it won't jump the way you swerve anyway.

Where are you people driving where there's chickens in the road and pedestrians all over next to the road?
Must be in town huh? If so I'm just gonna hit the chicken. Neither swerving or braking sounds like the best option.

You know....I was thinking along similar lines. If you're driving in an area wrought with proverbial chickens and errant children, perhaps you are driving at an unsafe pace if you would have to slam on brakes or swerve to avoid the said proverbial children.

Hey, that's the BRAKES!

Situational awareness

If you're a tailgater, you might just rear end my truck when I am braking for the two fawns in the middle of the rural highway.
Better you stranded with a crushed radiator than the fawns crushed.

BTW, aim high in steering, keep your eyes moving and check your mirrors.

When you collide with the back of my truck, I'll know your coming.

I never 'stomp' my brakes, just like I never spasticity swerve or do anything else that may cause the vehicle to go out of control.

Funny how quickly this thread went from a chicken on the wrong side of a fence to amateur driving hour with everyone's children in peril. I am beginning to understand how the Armcos along the straightways are getting smashed!
