UPDATE 7/2 gave her monistat: I checked on her a few times last night she was standing sleeping, quiet. This morning still full (super full) and looked frantic for food. I gave her 3/4 scrambled egg mixed with 2cc of monistat 7 along with a 1/2 tsp yogurt (familiar flavor). i'll give this to her twice a day. why does she want to eat so much?? she wanted more but it stopped her started with a smaller amount and she wanted more. Is she getting enough if i'm only feading the equivalent of an egg each date. i washed her up a bit and she's back in her temporary quarantine. my plan is to let her rest and keep an eye on her. I think it's going to be a long day.

hi have a sick bird (Blacky) she's a 1 1/2 year black ostralorp. normally kept outside with 3 other birds her age. she was getting bullied (bloody from pecks) so she was moved inside. i don't think she's broody, but not 100% (it's a friends's theory). also, her crop, part of the under body, and the back/side of her head are bald (i was out of town so friends got her set up inside) a couple days later she developed sour crop(?) and hasn't laid an egg since. her original symptoms: bobbing neck around trying to move something inside, swollen balloon crop that didn't go down in the morning, when mouth open stinky, lethargic, gurgling insides.

The first 3 days were rough, she wasn't interested water so much but would still eat and every day passed food through her. most of the time very healthy looking poops. She's doing so much better but the crop is still full and she seems uncomfortable but not major. You can almost feel the crop fill with something occasionally when i massage it. she'll come up to me and lean her back into the massage which makes me think she wants it. it must help because massaging results in smelling her sour gasses/ breath (?)? i haven't looked down her throat but when she opens her mouth wide, i don't see any white. she did vomit (2 days in a row, with and without my help) many times. I've read too much about hurting them so that's over and we now rub downward. she looked like she wanted my help to vomit (she'd squack if i didn't!) her sleep schedule is off now that she's inside (2nd shifter)

I DO NOT want to give her monistat 7 if it's not sour crop. She always wants the olive oil, eggs are a hit and yogurt is a hit sometime. she can be moping around, see a bug and then be on the prowl, she wants to eat grass and plants. she preens herself. She can pass food and drinks water, wants to snuggle, follow me, find things to eat on the floor, (i'm limiting her food) go outside but she still has the airy feeling crop and her mood is off. sometimes it feels like she's telling me what she needs, recently i feel she's tricking me into and feeding her eggs and oil giving her free run of the place, constant care/attentions. how do i know the anti-fungle is the good choice at this stage? I bought both monistat 3 and 7. I had the "monistat7" it in my hand ready to mix in her egg but i chickened out.

The information out there is conflicting, I've tried no food or water, ACV added to water, yogurt, eggs, olive oil, vomiting, moist pellets, dry pellets, red wine (a thimble full), massaging the crop upward and downward.

Notes: she's been on the bottom of the pecking order starting spring, she's made that bobbing motion on and off starting a good month ago, it was not a constant thing. I didn't always have grit available (never again!) i was feeding them tall grass, weeds and worms (never again) inside their run vs letting them out in the yard in fear of an animal getting to them.

could it be anything else? should i give her monistat 7 and how much?? thanks!

Your hen could have both an impacted crop as well as sour crop. You will need to treat both. Here is my article on identifying and treating crop disorders. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/ You will need to treat the impaction with oil first, then when the impaction is cleared by massaging the crop, then follow up with the miconazole. (Monistat)

Yogurt is good to give a victim with a crop disorder, but not if it has sugar in it, as sugar aggravates yeast infections.

Thank you for the quick response. Its always been on the squishy side. A chicken keeper friend didn't feel anything inside the crop. He thought it felt like air. What can I expect from the monistat (she took it around 8am) treatment (to hopefully avoid some panic) I bought plain Greek yogurt. Early on she was vomiting strands of grass and two pretty good size weeds.weeds

The grass she vomited indicates the sour crop is likely a result of continuing blockage, if not in the crop itself, then farther down the digestive track. I would do the oil treatment to take care of this blockage, then continue the yeast treatment for a full seven days.

If the oil doesn't clear the blockage, you will find the crop will remain full. If it doesn't improve, I would follow up with a second oil treatment.

can i feed her pellets during this time. ? she's getting thin.

Yesterday did not feel anything solid or hard in her crop. She pooped smelly liquid and a little soft brown several times. She also had the monistat yesterday. This morning her crop was down and small firm but not hard. (She had water with her) she had egg a monistat this morning. Now her crop is small and hard. She only has water with he and shes been drinking a lot seems uncomfortable or maybe shes jusy miserable being cooped up and hungry.

Sour crop is really bad I will go with @azygous advice
When my chickens crop go slow I give them fennel tea & granite grit also some yoghurt but ballon crop is a serious problem need serious treatment
Sour crop happens cause of lack good gut bacteria

Poor girl has to be so tired and sore from all the poops (if you want to call it tha, it's more like vomit.) Please tell me this is the expected result when giving her the monistat 7. She's eating and drinking and pooping countless times ( liquid for the most part. ) upside, Her crop is no longer a balloon. I like to call it " pooping out the poison. "

To confirm I'm supposed to continue giving her the monistat for 7 days, 2cc twice a day even if she's doing better. Correct?

Correct. Seven days twice a day. Yu can start giving her a probiotic or Greek yogurt to restore good bacteria in her crop and intestines. That will help get her poop back to normal.

If you've been giving her water with ACV, you might hold back the ACV until treatment is completed.
