apple is gone

Ours love apples, smashed up bananas (they would probably eat them whole, but my son thinks they should be smashed), yogurt still, bread, cabbage, strawberries, blueberries and who knows what else???

They don't like potatoes (and not just the peeling) but we have never tried them mashed.

I was wondering about wild bird seed?? Anyone try this?? Do you just give it to them to peck at or do you mix it in something??

I made 2 apple pies and 2 pear pies today, the chickens got all the peels and cores of both. They loved them and ate them faster than I could put them out. My girls also love white bread, not so much wheat bread, but will eat it if I don't have white for them. I get big bags of outdated bakery for a $1, so they get lots of different kinds of bakery as treats.

Hung a cabbage out for my girls at about 20 wks. They ignored it for about 4 days then they hollowed it out in about 2 hours. Got to love them

In the winter mine come up to the house and get under the bird feeders for anything the wild birds scratch off. They love it and I feed so many whole grains to my chickens anyhow so know they are fine with it. They just have to be able to grind up whole grains and all my birds live in tractors or free range so they have access to dirt and grit.

rngrbill,
it is not only my saying so you are more than welcome to use it. I took it from others and we all want to spread the word on how we feel! If you like it, use it. And God bless you!

Needing some advise.... I have never hung treats from the ceiling as I have read about in other threads.... but I have several comets, black sexlinks and brown leghorn that I have moved together in a an area we call the breezeway. These are all pullets approx 18 to 20 weeks old. All pullets except one brown leghorn cockerel. Of course they are establishing the pecking order, but I thought it may help to have some distractions other than a little scratch feed. So....my questions is if I suspend a head of cabbage, do I need to be concerned they may pull off pieces too big. I don't want to try to avoid pecking just to create another problem with a piece of cabbage stuck in their crop. Any advise?

I may be breaking the rules as I posted same question in another thread, but got no response. Sorry!

Mine love strawberries and stand by the fence when I am picking my strawberries because I throw them the ones that have been nibbled on or are starting to get soft. When I give them bread, they grace me with more eggs, the love it. Mine also love apples. I get them from a friends old orchard by the bushel. I make stuff for the house, but share it with the horses and chickens.

I dont think you should have a problem with the chunks being to big. i think they will just keep pecking at it till they eat it all anyways. Ive seen my girls take a whole leaf of lettuce and peck peices out of it till it was gone.
