Applewood Acres
In the Brooder
Hello all, I've been lurking for a while reading a number of threads, but finally took the plunge and registered. Our family finally made our way out to a new house and property in the country (southeast Michigan) last summer after being mortgage trapped in the suburbs for the last 5 years or so.
Having a small flock of chickens (mostly for egg production for now as we are not keen on self processing and haven't found anyplace local to process chickens for us) and a large garden is at the top of our priority list this spring.
My wife grew up with chickens and a bunch of other animals on a small family farm. I grew up in the country but mostly around horses and crops than farm animals.
We're looking to get started with 6-8 Heritage Rhode Island Red Hens, preferrably already laying or about to start because we aren't set up for chicks this year. If anybody has source they can put me in touch with we would be appreciative.
By day (and all too often by night as well), I work in the IT field, but would love nothing more than to live entirely off the land in a few years if finances allowed for it, but alas, that is unlikely.
Anyways, excited to be here and get to know some of you.
