April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

I hope newbies can enter? I've got 9...hatched on 4/4. 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 White Leghorns, 1 Silver Wyandotte, 1 ISA Brown, 1 Production Red. I picked them up from Abendroth's Hatchery here in WI on 4/5. I wanted only 6, but got an extra 3 because I thought I would lose some with me being a first time chicken owner. All are doing great. I think I'm going to have lots of eggs...good thing my friends want them!

Newbes especially welcome:)

That leghorn may give this thread it's first egg :) They tend to lay pretty early

I think my brown leghorn will be my first layer. We shall see...

I am working on extending my wifi network, i plan on a nest box cam so i can see whos laying:)
When they lay of course...

I am guessing i am two weeks out at least for either the sex link or white or brown leghorn

Open nests at about 15-16 weeks, put fakies in then.
That gives you some time to make sure they won't roost(sleep) in the nests.

I opened mine when I built them this week, 14 weeks old. They have been checking them out but no sleeping, they have been on the roost for a couple months now I doubt the will start sleeping there I could close off if I have to. I could hot glue some fake eggs and pull it up later... I really am hoping the girls will lay in the nest box, roll out no bedding really just a dense commercial carpet (almost like felt but dense) The eggs roll out nicely at not a severe tilt:)

Oh @Arrt, meant to ask on another thread about cleaning coop/deep litter I said my coop does not stink, you said it gets worse (smell) as they get older? Really?
