April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

My darn broody refuses to leave her nest box. I had hoped that she would be committed as this is her first ever broody cycle. But this is obnoxious! I blocked off half the coop for her which is a ton of space. I’ve been forcing her to eat and drink the past three days. And she hasn’t happily obliged by ANY means. Even mealworms took some coaxing. She was doing some odd head twitching that seemed neurological to me. At the time I knew she hasn’t pooped in at least 48 hours so I’m wondering if it was the toxins building up in her system.

This morning I had to physically take her out of the coop. I kept her out until she pooped and my goodness it could have competed in size with my 100lb Shepherds poop. She then ran around screaming, took a half second dust bath, and scratched/pecked a few things. Then went back to her eggs.

I plan on forcing her to get out again later but she cant go on like this. I’m debating taking the eggs from her. My other broody was literally by the book perfect. She always made sure she took care of herself too.

Any experienced broody care givers that have a suggestion for making sure she doesn’t starve to death?
Right now I have two broody. One is one year old and brooded twice last year. She’s taking long breaks every hour 🙄 and my seven months pullet that I need to take out for a break. 🙄

My last egg/baby didn't make it. :(. I won't be in here as much. Have a mentally disabled sister that's been on Dialysis. She hasn't had luck with fishulas and grafts..Soo many surgeries. She's done with it all. Had her port in her chest taken out. Came home to our home, to go home. Good luck on your hatch. I do have other eggs in. Hope they do ok. 🤞.

So hard for everyone! I can understand how she feels, though. :hugs ❤️

Oh man. That's sad news. My heart breaks for your family. If you need any help caring for your animals shoot me a PM. I'm not sure if you remember or not but we live very close to each other :hugs

Say hello to Lucky, lol, my broodies have played musical nests so much I'd given up on getting any hatches from them, my two broodies in the main flock, one had disappeared, the other had changed nests, so I picked up the egg that this little guy was in, had been going to just toss it over the fence (we have open land on 3 sides) but something said don't do it, I heard chirping as I came around the corner of the house, figured it was this irritating sparrow we have. Sounds just like a chick chirping. As I was collecting my basket out of the golf cart, I saw some black in the hole in the egg. Figured what the heck, see how far it had gotten, well, this is how far..lol. Looks like he's going to make it through the night and I see a trip to TSC in the morning to get him some buddies, my incubators aren't due till the 17th and 24th. Don't want him all on his own.

The power went out at my house last night but fortunately we have a woodstove so I just put the incubator under the stove for the night and stayed there to monitor the temperature and humidity. I think it stayed about right.
I also candled the eggs and as far as I can tell only one is alive out of eleven. And not because of the power outage, this was before that.
So, I'm hoping that my one egg makes it. These eggs were about two weeks old when I started incubating, and I had some incubator troubles in the first few days but somehow its survived.
