April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

Sorry I disappeared - I ended up in the hospital for five days for an emergency gallbladder eviction. Luckily I got home just in time for lockdown on Monday, and I now have several external pips! I'm excited to see how these look, since they are predominantly out of my grey silkie pen with my one grey rooster. I just kicked him out to the bacholor pen, and have my other grey rooster in there now, because I want to see if one is better than the other (yes, I'm throwing away eggs for at least 14 days). My May hatches are going to be interesting....

Prayers for a swift, full recovery! Good luck on your hatch!

I hope recovery goes smooth and quickly!

Welcome back! May you recover quickly with little discomfort!

OK, still no pictures but all 14 babies hatched! I am beyond thrilled. All of my hatches so far except for this one have had many DIS at the end - I must be figuring it out!

Throughout the incubation process I removed 8 eggs - a couple blood rings very early on, and some quitters. No idea why they quit. I had some temperature fluctuation issues at the beginning, and a little bit of a learning curve on humidity with this particular bator...but overall I am so pleased.

Now...to pick which two babies out of the 14 that I will keep for our flock. The other 12 have already been sold. Y'all, they are so cute, this will be a very difficult choice 😭.

I would just monitor and give it a bit more time as a pip in the correct place. I had 2 pip the small end of the egg in my Easter hatch a long eggs/Sapphire Gem eggs groups and they both hatched fine on their own.
Do you have pics of your saphire gems? Would love to see them, some of mine had white on the tips of their wings at a week old wondering if the could a cross mix

I am late to the original post but had to share! I incubated 15 eggs and hatched 13 yesterday! One of the original showed no development at 2nd candling and the other didn’t make it out of the shell. Seems it rolled toward the water under the grate and couldn’t get air. I feel successful with 13!

I incubate every year in my 4th grade classroom and this year I had to incubate virtually to give my kids the experience. I made you tube videos throughout the process and did a few zoom meetings to share. I used eggs from my personal flock, I have a barred rock rooster and assorted hens so they are mixed and a few true barred rocks as well.
Moving them to a bigger brooder today!
