April 2021 Hatch - A - Long

Pics
I’m jumping into this thread. Hope you guys aren’t opposed to Ducklings in this thread! (Couldn’t find a duck specific April hatch a long). It will be my 1st ever duck hatch! My March chicken hatch went sooo good (20 of 24 hatched)& now I’m hoping the same for my duck eggs.

I set them on the 20th so hatch day is April 17th-19th as I added eggs on day 1 & 2 as my girls were laying them. I marked each so I know while candling. I won’t be candling until day 10 (perhaps 14 if I can make it).
I’m hatching ducks this round too! Mine are due to hatch around the 5th! First time with ducks, I’m looking forward to them.

Hey guys! This is my very first hatch along! This is my second time hatching eggs, last time 2/3 eggs hatched. This time I am setting 6 eggs and the hatch date is April 13th....... SO exciting!! I have an RIR Rooster and a California white hen so can't wait to see what I get!
my second time hatching as well, went off the deep end and put 24 eggs in, I think i'm down to 22 now. When I cnadled last night, I think one blood ring was showing, but I still have some veins. giving it another day or two.

When is the best time to candle them? Day 4? Day 10? Or what days do you candle and why?

yes, lol I candle often, every other day at times. depending on the difficulty of seeing inside the eggs, he harder to see, the more frequently I candle it seems. as mentioned above I'm a rookie, not a pro.

So my silkie replacement eggs are on the way!
:wee
Got the notification they should be here Friday morning. Will set later that day as they will be already 6 days old when they arrive. Breeder sent 6 lavender silkie eggs and 6 more "surprise" colors. I will add whatever my splash silkie Layla has laid by then, so far I have 2 saved. She is the only one laying again of my 3 silkie girls.
I have another set of 14 on day 4 of incubation on the Easter HAL. Hoping to get more than 0 hatch this time around!😊

All this silkie talk from you and none are broody???? LOL that's like the only reason i'm getting into silkies is the broody characteristic. I don't want to incubate often, I want them to do it for me!

I have some pekin and some blue runners but the drakes she has running around are pekins, cayuga and khaki campbells so I'm not entirely sure what I'll end up with. I put 12 in, 3 quit around day 10. We're on day 16!!

Haha suprise hatch. Got to love when there’s multiple drakes.

Mine are Saxony, welsh Harlequin, blue Swedish & Rouen mix hen under a Rouen mix (to my best guess) drake.

My drakes just black bibbed when I bought him I thought he was Ancona mix (which is possible) but he’s got a lot of black & gets the green & blue sheen in summer.

I’m hoping after this hatch to start some Ancona Duck eggs I tracked down.

Ha Ha! The little buggers do not consult me when they go broody! Does not always correspond to when I have eggs. All 3 went broody after I started incubating last month. Now they have stopped. I need to coordinate better with them next time around!🤣
Don’t worry, you will definitely get broodiness from silkies!🥰

Good to know! I think I'll do their first candling on day 4 and then play it by ear. Sooo nervous and curious to see how many develop! Hopefully all 22 were fertilized and good to go.

This is my EE Roo so I'm super curious on what his chicks will look like because my hens are a white EE, columbian wyandottes, silver laced wyandottes, barnevelders, and buff brahma bantams. Should make for some "interesting" offspring lol
