April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

oh for those that do staggered hatches (thought there were some) in the same incubator. how do you work it with humidity. These eggs will be on day 2-5 when the others are in lockdown. So I think I should have it lower for a bit after the others hatch to "even it out" but what should I keep it at after? and for how long? I will hand turn them as much as I can while waiting for pips. I may see if anyone local has an incubator that I can borrow for like a week so I don't have to worry about that. And do you clean it after one set hatches if you have others in there????
The answer is: you need another incubator😀

I run hatches in my cabinet while there are still other eggs in there. I am not scientific about it. I just unplug the humidity pump for as long as I had the humidity high for hatch. This tends to even out the average on my govee so it’s still in the range of 45%.

Thanks. I have a govee too so guess I will watch that.

If I go for a staggered hatch again I'll do a partly dry hatch.

If you do stagger, try and have a couple incubators, to trade them out, and hatching juices don't get on eggs. It is also easier to stager where you have eggs that are 4-5 days apart, then you can tell who needs to stay in longer, and who is closer to hatch.

Also if you stagger never put cold eggs in with eggs that have been developing a while. One or 2 days, if you add a cold egg will not matter as much, but if you add one when the other eggs are 5 days old (for example,) it could hurt the developing eggs.

Three out now, and the fourth is pipped.

So far, one chick has the typical SS/wildtype down with a huge muff/beard and pea comb. The other two are lighter "chipmunk" types and appear to have clean faces. One for sure has a single comb, and the other looks like it has something in between a pea and a single comb.

It'll be really interesting to see how this crew looks as they grow. I really don't know what to expect from them - the rooster is a cross between a White Ameraucana (recessive white over wheaten) and an Olive Egger who laid green eggs and was a light red columbia color with a single comb.

They are working on coming in before midnight, lol. Two so far....a Blue Splash Silkie and a Black Copper Marans.
